About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Train Operations Lead to join our team at Virgin Trains. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our rail services.

As a Train Operations Lead, you will play a vital part in maintaining the highest standards of operational delivery. Your expertise as a mainline train driver will be instrumental in assessing and developing the skills of your team of drivers. You will implement competency management systems, conduct proactive and reactive improvement plans, and support the seamless integration of new drivers, routes, traction, and equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain rigorous safety standards across all operational activities.
  • Provide expert guidance and mentorship to a team of train drivers.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance driver capability and operational performance.
  • Conduct thorough investigations into operational incidents, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Collaborate closely with Network Rail and other stakeholders to optimize train service delivery.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years' current UK mainline competence as a train driver.
  • In-depth knowledge of Virgin Trains routes, infrastructure, and rolling stock.
  • Strong understanding of competency techniques and operational risk management.
  • Familiarity with HR processes and practices.
  • Proficiency in IT systems such as Microsoft Office applications, TRUST, Bugle, and OTDR analysis.
  • Proven leadership skills with a coaching style and excellent interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to make informed decisions based on data analysis and effective listening skills.
  • Experience in leading teams and managing people and processes.
