Didcot, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Full time

Position Overview:

Title: Quantum Fellow

Salary: STEM 1 Band G £75,136 - £82,649 OR STEM 1 Band H £88,094 - £96,903 (dependent on skills and experience)

Contract Duration: Fixed Term between 3-5 Years

Working Hours: Full-Time or Part-Time (Band G minimum 18 hours per week or Band H minimum 15 hours per week)

Location: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxfordshire, UK

About the Organization:

The National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) is a pioneering research institution, supported by UK Research and Innovation, dedicated to advancing quantum computing technology by tackling the challenges associated with its scalability. The Centre collaborates with businesses, governmental bodies, and the research community to enhance quantum computing capabilities in the UK and foster the growth of this emerging sector. The NQCC will provide assured access to early prototype machines for developers and promote the establishment of a robust UK-based quantum computing supply chain.

A state-of-the-art facility for the NQCC is set to open in 2024 at Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire. Until then, NQCC activities are conducted at various facilities on the Harwell Campus or in collaboration with partner institutions. The NQCC operates alongside other departments within the STFC National Laboratories and is part of the broader National Quantum Technologies Programme (NQTP), a joint initiative of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

Role Responsibilities:

This strategic position offers the successful candidate the opportunity to engage in an ambitious research agenda in quantum science and technology, focusing primarily on quantum computing. As a senior scientist, the role will encompass research topics across the STFC quantum portfolio, including but not limited to Quantum Technology for Fundamental Physics, Quantum Materials, Quantum Networking, Distributed Entanglement, and Quantum Timing & Sensing.

The successful candidate will dedicate between 20% and 100% of their full-time equivalent (FTE) to the NQCC as a Quantum Fellow.

As a senior contributor to our technological initiatives, Quantum Fellows will play a vital role in establishing our reputation as a trusted source of expertise and national capability in quantum computing, thereby catalyzing and accelerating the development of a vibrant UK academic and industrial quantum computing sector.

In this role, the successful applicant will leverage current research findings to guide and advise on high-potential areas for the NQCC and contribute to the broader UK quantum computing landscape, shaping the future of quantum computing in alignment with the strategic objectives of the National Quantum Technologies Programme (NQTP) and the STFC Quantum Strategy.

Collaboration with the Deputy Director of Research and the Chief Scientist will be essential, as this role will connect the research community, the NQCC technology team, and our technical roadmap while supporting the execution of our science and technology strategy.

Key Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated capability to enhance the UK's quantum computing capacity.
  • Proven track record in leading innovative research in quantum science and technology.
  • Established international network in quantum science providing expertise and value.
  • Commitment to achieving the NQTP's strategic goals regarding talent retention in the UK.
  • Ability to provide expert advice to the NQCC and strengthen connections between academia, industry, and government in this strategically important field.
  • Engagement in the delivery of the STFC Quantum Strategy.

Informal discussions with the NQCC Director are encouraged to fully understand expectations prior to application.

Funding and Support:

This strategic role within the NQCC is supported by core funding from EPSRC and STFC. Opportunities for external project funding will be available through standard UKRI funding processes once in position. This role is targeted at individuals with extensive expertise and a proven track record in quantum science and technology.

Part-time applicants holding joint positions at academic institutions should identify available funding through that secondary source.

Benefits:

This is an exciting opportunity to join the NQCC, where you can apply your research expertise to advance quantum computing within the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme.

STFC offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to promote an excellent work/life balance, including 30 days of annual leave, flexible working hours, a workplace nursery, an outstanding pension scheme, and various social and sporting activities.

Visa sponsorship and relocation allowances may be available for suitable international candidates.
