London, Greater London, United Kingdom University College London Hospitals Full time

Job Overview

This position presents a unique and rewarding opportunity to contribute to the radiotherapy and proton beam therapy review team at University College London Hospitals. The successful candidate will rotate between the photon and proton therapy departments, taking a leadership role within the Radiotherapy Review Team. This role is pivotal in assessing patients throughout their treatment, providing both physical and emotional support during their radiotherapy journey.

The individual will be responsible for ensuring that each patient has a comprehensive on-treatment review plan and an effective communication strategy for addressing any adverse effects experienced during therapy.

A key aspect of this role involves assisting patients in comprehending the treatment process, potential side effects, and the management of symptoms. Training related to proton and photon beam therapy, including side effect management and necessary foundational knowledge, will be provided. Additionally, support for on-treatment review training and independent or supplementary prescribing will be available as needed.

The photon department is equipped with state-of-the-art Varian TrueBeam systems, advanced imaging capabilities, and 6DoF couches. It also features a fully equipped brachytherapy suite and a Gulmay skin unit. University College London Hospitals is one of the few NHS facilities offering proton beam therapy services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Review Radiographers, Radiotherapy Sisters, and Staff Nurses, taking a leadership role within the review team.
  • Conduct patient assessments during their photon or proton treatment, providing essential physical and psychological support.
  • Develop and implement a structured plan for on-treatment reviews, ensuring effective communication regarding any adverse effects.
  • Lead service evaluations, audits, and projects aimed at quality improvement within the Review Team.
  • Mentor and facilitate the professional development of Review Team members.
  • Educate patients about the treatment process, potential toxicity, and side effects of radiotherapy, encouraging them to report side effects and manage symptoms effectively.
  • Ensure timely and appropriate management of patients' side effects.
  • Provide verbal and written information as necessary.
  • Foster an environment where patients feel comfortable discussing their concerns and feel supported throughout their treatment.
  • Refer patients to other healthcare professionals, such as dieticians and counselors, as needed.
  • Coordinate follow-up arrangements and ensure continuity of care is communicated effectively to patients and relevant healthcare professionals.
