Position Overview

The Gastroenterology division at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking a full-time Consultant specializing in Luminal Gastroenterology, with a focus on Hepatobiliary Endoscopy.

This department is dedicated to delivering a thorough service for individuals facing gastroenterological challenges while emphasizing the importance of education, training, and research across all levels. The team collaborates closely with the Hepatology unit and the Pancreatic/Biliary Medicine team, ensuring comprehensive care for a diverse patient population.

The Gastroenterology service maintains strong connections with upper gastrointestinal surgery and HPB surgery, as well as lower gastrointestinal surgery departments. It benefits from robust support from Histopathology and Radiology, alongside partnerships with Nutrition and Dietetics and the Bariatric Service.

The endoscopy facilities at ICHT offer a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. The endoscopy units are accredited, and the role may require providing endoscopy services across multiple sites. Services include upper and lower GI endoscopy, capsule endoscopy, ERCP, EUS, and luminal stenting.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will collaborate with team members to ensure the delivery of high-quality acute and general medical services within the established strategic framework. Responsibilities will include:

  • Managing ward duties and acute care responsibilities as outlined in the departmental guidelines.
  • Conducting five endoscopy lists and outpatient clinics weekly.
  • Participating in the out-of-hours endoscopy service.

Commitment to Patient Care

The candidate must hold a medical qualification and maintain GMC specialist registration. Additionally, they should be JAG accredited in EUS and ERCP, ensuring they possess the necessary competencies for the role.

Job Responsibilities

The department offers a comprehensive array of both inpatient and outpatient services.

Inpatient Gastroenterology

The Gastroenterology team currently provides consultant ward coverage on a rotational basis. The new position will facilitate a shift to a more balanced coverage model. Weekly consultant-led nutrition rounds are also part of the responsibilities.

This role does not require participation in the Acute Medical Take, but candidates should be proficient in managing general medical patients.

Outpatient Gastroenterology Services

  • General Gastroenterology outpatient clinics.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease clinics.
  • Specialist PB clinics.
  • Day case endoscopy procedures.
  • Capsule endoscopy and breath testing.
  • GI physiology assessments.
  • Dedicated clinics for hepatitis, cirrhosis, and fatty liver.
  • Bowel Cancer Screening initiatives.

On-Call Responsibilities

The on-call consultant will oversee Upper GI Bleeding across multiple sites, supported by junior staff and nursing personnel. The expected on-call frequency is manageable and includes appropriate remuneration.

Qualifications

Essential

  • GMC registered Medical Practitioner.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register through CCST, CESR, or European Community Rights.
  • Membership of the appropriate Royal College (MRCP).

Knowledge and Skills

  • CCST in Gastroenterology.
  • Independent practice in luminal endoscopy and EUS/ERCP.
  • Proficient IT skills.
