About the Role

The Mental Health Liaison (MHL) Nurse Specialist will play a critical role in supporting patients with mental health needs in our inpatient units. This includes pre-admission planning, managing acute mental health episodes, and collaborating with the multi-disciplinary team and Safeguarding Lead.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning and management of patients' mental health conditions, including pre-admission planning and managing sudden acute mental health episodes.
  • Manage a caseload within their scope of practice, with guidance from the CNO and wider clinical team.
  • Upskill and train colleagues to manage acute mental health patient deteriorations and provide advice on management out of hours.
  • Complete risk assessments and provide advice on mental capacity assessments, building links with external inpatient mental health partners.
  • Manage challenging or disturbed behaviour, provide advice on medication, and participate in discharge planning for inpatients requiring mental health support.
  • Demonstrate safe clinical judgement in evaluating, interpreting, and documenting the outcomes of mental health nursing and other interventions.
