St Albans, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom AECOM Full time
Job Overview

As global communities strive to effectively manage water resources throughout the water cycle, AECOM's Water specialists are at the forefront of developing innovative solutions. Our team collaborates across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, offering technical expertise in various areas including:

  • Hydraulic Modelling and Design (Surface, Potable, and Foul)
  • Flood Risk Management
  • Sustainable Drainage Systems and Water Sensitive Urban Design
  • Mains Infrastructure Design (Surface, Potable, and Foul)
  • Non-Infrastructure Design (Pumping Stations, Storage Tanks)
  • Hydrology and Water Resources

Our Civil Engineering graduates gain invaluable experience by engaging in diverse global projects alongside various disciplines. We encourage our graduates to deepen their understanding of multiple facets within the water sector, including hydraulic, structural, and environmental design through practical calculations, report writing, and the application of engineering software. You will collaborate with seasoned engineers in a supportive environment that prioritizes learning and professional growth.

One notable project includes the North Glasgow Integrated Water Management Scheme, which integrates digital technology with historic infrastructure to modernize Glasgow's canal network. This initiative has established a new stormwater runoff system that supports several housing regeneration projects while enabling real-time management of water levels.

We also facilitate our graduates' professional development through affiliations with organizations such as ICE or CIWEM, complemented by AECOM's Graduate Development program, which offers broader training and networking opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct numerical analyses utilizing computer-based programs for the assessment of potable, surface, and wastewater systems.
  • Perform technical and feasibility studies to evaluate the viability of alternative solutions concerning potable water, foul water, surface water, and attenuation requirements, including relevant calculations.
  • Execute structural analysis and design, determining design situations and load cases, employing calculation and analysis software.
  • Design water infrastructure, including pump systems and pipe networks, ensuring safety through the creation of Designer's Risk Assessment documents.
  • Produce sketches and review final working drawings prepared by Technicians.
  • Stay informed about developments in regulatory legislation and guidelines impacting design work.
  • Collaborate with team members to undertake technical tasks, site work, and project management.
  • Engage in site visits to enhance understanding of design implementation.

Qualifications:

  • BEng in Civil or Structural Engineering with a 2:1 classification (or equivalent).
  • MEng in Civil, Structural, or Water Engineering-related MSc (civils) is advantageous.
  • Water-related coursework is a plus.
  • Relevant work experience is beneficial.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm, strong work ethic, technical proficiency, ambition, and drive.
  • Basic computer skills (Word/Excel) and good report writing abilities are advantageous.
  • Willingness to pursue professional qualifications such as ICE & CIWEM.
  • Genuine interest in water projects.
  • Ability to meet client and business expectations while considering broader financial and commercial implications.
  • Effective communication skills with internal and external clients, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize work effectively in collaboration with the team.
  • Capacity to work independently while maintaining initiative and focus.
