Job Description

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Biomedical Scientist to join our Cellular Pathology Department with a focus in Histology. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing a comprehensive and appropriate laboratory service to patients and staff.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Diagnostic Work

Perform diagnostic work in designated areas of the department, utilizing intermediate theoretical knowledge and adhering to standard operational policies.

Autonomy and Decision-Making

Take part in duties at a level of autonomy requiring decision-making, with the ability to refer to more senior or medical staff for support when necessary.

Documentation and Quality Assurance

Ensure that documentation is maintained to the highest standard, including electronic records, and contribute to a culture of quality in the department.

Clinical Risks and Quality Control

Identify and report clinical risks, and take corrective action when quality control and assurance procedures indicate loss of performance.

Quality Initiatives and Accreditation

Assist in maintaining appropriate internal and external quality assurance and meeting standards required by external assessment, consistent with maintaining laboratory accreditation.

Performance Monitoring and Improvement

Measure and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

  • An honours degree or equivalent in a biological science.
  • Practical experience of a range of diagnostic pathology techniques.
  • Proven practical experience using diagnostic pathology laboratory equipment.
  • Experience of working with a laboratory computer system.
  • Experience of quality management systems.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.

Skills and Abilities

  • Practical analytical skills associated with diagnostic laboratory work.
  • Intermediate level of computer skills.
  • Use of enhanced pathology computer systems.
