AWE has been a leader in nuclear weapons research and development for nearly 70 years, with a vital objective: to supply the UK's deterrent capabilities. Our expertise also extends to providing the UK government with solutions for counter-terrorism and nuclear threat reduction.

We are seeking a dynamic leader to join our Warhead Engineering group in a key leadership position. This role presents a unique opportunity to influence a team of leaders, spearheading major advancements and transformations within the Warhead and One Engineering Function.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage a diverse team of over 100 technical professionals, including Technical Team Leaders, fostering an environment where individuals are empowered to excel.
  • Implement the engineering strategy and serve as the primary contact for team leaders and senior members, ensuring effective direction and support.
  • Engage with stakeholders, both internal and external, to enhance the department's technical capabilities in alignment with program demands.
  • Promote a collaborative and inclusive work culture that encourages talent identification and development.
  • Oversee the performance of team leaders, providing coaching and guidance to enhance delivery and operational plans.
  • Set the technical direction for the department, contributing to the strategic engineering resourcing strategy across AWE and its supply chain.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and maintain high standards in safety, health, and quality.
  • Act as an ambassador for AWE, showcasing exceptional interpersonal and presentation skills.

Qualifications and Skills:
  • A degree in a STEM discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Chartered professional status in a relevant institution is desirable.
  • Proven experience in leading high-performing multidisciplinary teams and managing complex engineering programs.
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to navigate transformation and change effectively.
  • Financial management experience, including budget oversight.
  • Proficient in standard office software and engineering applications.
  • Knowledge of industry trends and external influences on engineering practices.
  • Commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within the workplace.
