London, Greater London, United Kingdom Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

1 x Advanced Clinical Fellow in Obstetric Anaesthesia

This role presents a remarkable opportunity for a seasoned anaesthetist with a keen interest and proficiency in obstetric anaesthesia. The position is appropriate for an ST4+ level trainee or an individual with comparable anaesthesia experience and skills. Candidates must have successfully completed Stage 1 training and the Primary FRCA examination (or an equivalent international qualification) and must demonstrate competence in administering labour epidurals/combined spinal-epidural (CSE) techniques, as well as in the initial evaluation and stabilization of obstetric emergencies.

Key Responsibilities

This is a six-month position initially, with the potential for extension to twelve months. The successful candidate will integrate into a dynamic department that manages a significant volume of high-risk pregnancies. There is flexibility to tailor the role to align with the specific interests and requirements of the selected candidate.

Clinical responsibilities will primarily involve work on the labour ward and within anaesthetic lists throughout the facility. The on-call commitment will follow a 1:8 rotation on the obstetric rota. Fellows will be allocated dedicated time off to support projects and educational activities during their fellowship. Comprehensive support will be available for Portfolio enhancement, interview preparation, and career counseling.

Job Duties

The Maternity Unit accommodates both high- and low-risk cases, promoting a philosophy of midwife-led care alongside high-risk interventional obstetrics. The current delivery rate exceeds 6,000 annually.

The epidural administration rate is approximately 50%, with regional anaesthesia utilized in around 90% of caesarean sections. Our caesarean section rate stands at about 30%.

We collaborate with the adult congenital heart disease team at the Royal Brompton Hospital to provide a joint cardiac service, managing approximately 100 women annually with complex heart conditions.

Our facility serves as a provider for patients with abnormally invasive placenta and accepts regional case referrals for these patients.

Chelsea & Westminster Hospital is the designated center for in-utero transfers of neonates requiring surgical intervention within West London, and we offer Level 3 neonatal care for premature and critically ill infants. The Trust is the leading center for pediatric surgery in West London.

We have two dedicated obstetric operating theatres and a five-bedded nurse-led recovery and high dependency unit. Daily elective caesarean section lists are conducted alongside emergency cases. We are actively investigating a dedicated elective theatre pathway separate from the main Labour Ward in accordance with EMBRACE recommendations.
