About the Costs Litigation Team

The Costs Litigation Team is situated within the Justice and Development Division of GLD’s Litigation Group, collaborating across various departments. This Group provides litigation services to numerous government departments and executive agencies, often dealing with matters of significant constitutional importance.

Our Costs Litigation Team is recognized as a Centre of Excellence, focusing on legal costs litigation while also advising a broad spectrum of HM Government departments. We deliver high-quality, competitive legal cost services across diverse legal areas, including:

  • Judicial Review
  • Personal Injury
  • Clinical Negligence
  • Inquests and Inquiries
  • Human Rights
  • Employment and Land Tribunal
  • Commercial and Charities matters

The team is supported by a network of external costs service providers.

The Role

We are seeking to appoint a Grade 7 Senior Costs Lawyer/Draftsperson to enhance our team as a designated Centre of Excellence. This role is crucial in our commitment to developing our capabilities.

The position involves managing complex and high-value costs cases, collaborating closely with litigation colleagues from the outset of the litigation process. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Costs Lawyer/Draftsperson with strong technical and managerial skills.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Provide management and technical support to Senior Costs Lawyers and the Deputy Director, participating in regular team management meetings.
  • Oversee a small team of junior Costs Lawyers, Costs Draftspersons, and trainees, fostering a supportive environment while ensuring quality and performance standards are met.
  • Handle a caseload of complex and high-profile cost cases, including group litigation.
  • Advise colleagues and clients on intricate costs issues and develop broader costs strategies for key clients.
  • Coordinate urgent requests for costs management data and respond to inquiries under the Freedom of Information Act.
  • Contribute to the leadership and achievement of the team’s corporate objectives, promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Build relationships with key clients and internal litigation teams to further client objectives.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of CPR and the litigation process.
  • Stay updated on costs law and procedures, ensuring knowledge is shared with the team and clients.
  • Promote our Centre of Excellence status, which may involve delivering training and advice on costs to internal colleagues and clients.
  • Ensure quality service delivery in accordance with Lexcel and GLD service standards.
