Comprehensive Job Overview

The Psychological Support Specialist will engage in two primary domains of applied psychology: Critical Care Psychology and Occupational Health/Staff Wellbeing Psychology. The role involves a balanced allocation of time, with 40% dedicated to Occupational Health/Staff Wellbeing and 60% to Critical Care Psychology. Each specialist will receive guidance from supervisors in both sectors, ensuring robust support and direction throughout their duties.

Key Responsibilities:

Commitment to Patient/Family/Staff Wellbeing: This includes supporting the Critical Care and Occupational Health Psychology teams, assisting in clinical interactions with clients under supervision, participating in clinical team discussions, and contributing to the design and delivery of educational sessions for staff. Additionally, organizational and administrative support for both psychology services is expected.

Communication and Relationship Management: Responsibilities include representing the Occupational Health/Critical Care Psychology Service in multidisciplinary meetings, engaging in sensitive communication across various contexts, maintaining accurate and up-to-date case records in accordance with organizational policies, and demonstrating exceptional verbal and written communication skills, particularly in emotionally charged situations while respecting cultural and linguistic diversity. Collaboration with other healthcare services, social care entities, and charitable organizations for patient referrals is also a key aspect.

Contribution to Policy and Service Enhancement: The role involves advising the Lead Clinical Psychologist on service delivery issues, participating in meetings focused on service improvements, understanding Clinical Governance principles related to risk management and quality standards, and supporting initiatives for clinical governance, research, and service development.

General Duties: This includes fostering the highest professional standards of practice, supporting the Psychological Services Network, and ensuring effective and sensitive communication with colleagues and clients while maintaining exemplary clinical record-keeping practices.

Candidate Profile

Education and Qualifications:

Essential Criteria:

  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in Psychology
  • Eligibility for graduate membership of the British Psychological Society

Desirable Criteria:

  • A Master's or other postgraduate qualification in a relevant field
  • Experience in working with individuals facing physical health challenges, mental health issues, or disabilities

Knowledge:

Essential Criteria:

  • Understanding of psychology in healthcare, particularly in areas such as end-of-life care, rehabilitation, and illness self-management
  • Experience in data collection, organization, processing, and presentation using various IT tools

Desirable Criteria:

  • High proficiency in report writing and presentation

Skills:

Essential Criteria:

  • Excellent communication skills (interpersonal, written, and verbal), with the ability to engage empathetically and effectively in sensitive and time-critical situations
