Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled professional to join our Tobacco Dependency Team at North Middlesex University Hospital. As a Tobacco Dependency Advisor - Maternity, you will play a vital role in providing specialist advice and support to pregnant patients to help them abstain from/quit smoking during their pregnancy and beyond.

Main Duties

As a member of our Tackling Tobacco Dependency Team, you will be responsible for delivering individualized stop smoking support to pregnant patients in a flexible and innovative way. You will work closely with the Smoke Free Midwife Champion and other members of the maternity team to achieve this goal.

  • Provide stop smoking support throughout pregnancy and the immediate post-natal period, using evidence-based interventions such as Carbon monoxide monitoring, behavioural support, and Nicotine Replacement Therapy.
  • Act as a smoke-free champion, promoting the Trust's smoke-free policy and message through your day-to-day work.
  • Work closely with the Smoke Free Midwife Champion to deliver the Smoke-free Pregnancy Project and provide regular feedback on smoking in pregnancy data.
  • Work independently with patients, within agreed tobacco dependence pathways, recognizing when to defer to a more senior member of staff for advice and support.
  • Ensure robust follow-up and discharge planning for patients' ongoing tobacco dependency treatment.

North Middlesex University Hospital is one of London's busiest healthcare providers, offering a range of specialist services, including HIV, cardiology, blood disorders, diabetes, fertility, sickle cell, and thalassemia. We also provide community services and have a dedicated 0-19 service for children and young people in Enfield, aiming to improve pathways and partnerships with services in the hospital and deliver excellent care for children and families.

Person Specification

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with a passion for health promotion and health behaviour change. Essential criteria include:

  • GCSEs or equivalent in English and Mathematics.
  • A level or equivalent standard of education/practical experience.
  • Level 2 (NCSCT or equivalent) Stop Smoking Adviser qualification (or working towards).
  • NCSCT speciality module: Pregnancy and Post-partum.

Desirable criteria include specific training in health promotion/behaviour change interventions, NCSCT Standard Treatment Programme for Pregnant Women, and Very brief advice on smoking for pregnant women.

Skills and Abilities

We are looking for an individual with excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, as well as good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workload and coordinate their own schedule without direct supervision.
