Principal Let Estate Surveyor

Tunbridge Wells, Kent, United Kingdom National Trust Full time

Overview

The National Trust is home to one of the UK's most extensive and varied let estates. We are seeking a knowledgeable Senior Building Surveyor to join our Let Estate Management Team. This role requires expertise in building conservation and strong interpersonal skills to oversee maintenance and repairs across our properties in Sussex and Kent, operating from our estate office.

Given the travel involved, a valid driving license and access to a personal vehicle are essential, with business mileage reimbursable through expenses.

We embrace hybrid working, allowing a blend of remote and on-site office engagement, with a significant portion of the week spent collaborating with the team and managing properties.

This full-time position offers a competitive salary of approximately £50,000 per year, contingent on experience.

Work Environment

As a Senior Let Estate Building Surveyor for Sussex and Kent, you will be an integral part of a dynamic team responsible for a diverse array of residential, commercial, and agricultural properties, including holiday accommodations across some of the Trust's most esteemed estates.

The team collaborates to manage our let estate assets, which are vital to our £50 million national rental income, essential for funding our conservation initiatives. This role presents a unique variety of work in stunning locations, ensuring that no two days are alike.

One of our primary objectives is to foster a healthy and resilient natural environment for both people and wildlife. Our portfolio is committed to ambitious plans that you will help shape, contributing to the future of the UK's largest private landowning charity and the properties we safeguard.

Key Responsibilities

We have significant aspirations to enhance the condition and energy efficiency of our Let Estate properties. In this role, you will serve as a technical expert, specifying, tendering, and managing substantial projects while collaborating closely with Building Supervisors and Estate Managers.

Your responsibilities will include providing practical supervisory support for repairs and maintenance within your designated portfolios. You will oversee building supervisors and advise estate managers, planning and executing both short and long-term cyclical building works, compliance tasks, and improvements, including securing Listed Building Consents, for which you will hold financial accountability.

You will address conservation challenges related to historic and listed buildings, conduct surveys across the portfolio, develop work schedules, solicit quotes from contractors, and coordinate with tenants to ensure effective planning and execution of works.

Each day will present new challenges, requiring adaptability and innovative thinking. A flexible approach will be necessary at times, along with strong organizational skills to prioritize tasks effectively in response to unexpected developments.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We encourage applications from individuals who possess:

  • A qualification in surveying or architecture (such as MRICS, MCIOB, RIBA, or an equivalent credential)
  • Strong financial acumen and extensive experience managing significant budgets
  • In-depth knowledge of building conservation, including listed building consents, procurement, maintenance, repair, and asset management
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation and best practices
  • A proven track record of delivering projects in a multidisciplinary environment
  • The ability to operate effectively across a diverse client portfolio and extensive geographical areas.

Benefits

The National Trust is committed to fostering an inclusive culture where everyone feels valued and represented. We strive to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve.
