Community Engagement Specialist - Essex Countywide Traveller Unit

Permanent, Full Time

Salary: £26,844 to £31,582 per annum

The Role

As a member of the Essex Countywide Traveller Unit Outreach Team (ECTU), you will collaborate closely with the Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller (GRT) community throughout Essex. Your primary focus will be to provide exceptional outreach support that fosters positive outcomes for the GRT community and the broader population, while facilitating the delivery of integrated services on behalf of various stakeholders and partners.

This position is dedicated to offering outreach assistance to the GRT community in Essex, ensuring equitable access to services and promoting the integration of GRT families into the larger community. Your efforts will aim to enhance educational participation, improve access to learning opportunities, and elevate health outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the inclusion of the GRT community within the wider society, ensuring accessibility to services and fostering a deeper understanding of their culture and beliefs.
  • Act as an advocate for GRT community members, working to address inequalities and influencing broader health determinants by collaborating with organizations both within and outside of Essex County Council.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and enhancement of the ECTU Outreach services, initiating new partnerships and constructively challenging organizations to improve services and address the inequalities faced by the GRT community.
  • Ensure compliance with safeguarding protocols and statutory responsibilities to support child and adult protection, collaborating with Social Care, law enforcement, and other relevant agencies as necessary.
  • Assist families in accessing both mainstream and alternative educational opportunities, working alongside various agencies to improve educational outcomes for the GRT community.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Possession of A level qualifications or equivalent, or relevant professional qualifications, or substantial experience in educational, health, social care, or community-oriented environments.
  • Demonstrated experience in multi-agency collaboration, with a proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with a track record of managing sensitive and challenging interactions with clients.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively while maintaining focus on key objectives, both independently and as part of a team.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with health, wellness, educational, financial support, referral services, and other community resources.
  • Experience in outreach roles that connect clients with appropriate resources and support.
  • Background in addressing inequalities and advocating for systemic change.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Mobility Requirement

This role necessitates mobility across an operational area. Therefore, candidates must possess a valid driving license and have access to a vehicle, or demonstrate the ability to meet the mobility requirements of the position through alternative means.
