Laboratory Support Technician

Position Overview
The Cellular Pathology division at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and proactive Laboratory Support Technician to become an integral part of our dynamic Histopathology team.
Our department processes a significant volume of Histology and Cytology requests annually, with all routine technical operations conducted within our facility.
This role encompasses assisting the department in delivering diagnostic services, which includes tasks such as specimen data entry, preparation and management of specimens, responding to telephone inquiries, maintaining equipment, overseeing stock levels, managing laboratory waste, and performing certain semi-automated and automated technical tasks.
The ideal candidate will be diligent, enthusiastic, and capable of thriving in a collaborative environment while managing pressure effectively. Essential skills include excellent hand-eye coordination, proficient keyboard abilities, and a keen attention to detail.
Strong communication and IT skills are also required, as the successful candidate will be expected to engage fully in the department's accreditation processes.
While relevant experience is beneficial, comprehensive training will be provided to the right individual.
Main Responsibilities
- Adhere to standard operating procedures consistently.
- Participate in data entry for cellular pathology samples.
- Assess the urgency of requests and prioritize tasks according to established protocols.
- Verify samples prior to processing for identification, status, and suitability for diagnostic evaluations, consulting with a Biomedical Scientist as necessary.
- Prepare specimens, making informed decisions regarding the appropriate processing methods, including fixation and wet preparations.
- Assist the medical and scientific team during specimen dissection, documenting details and verifying specimen information.
- Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting on complex laboratory equipment to ensure optimal functionality.
- Load slide scanners as directed.
- Match completed cases for final quality assurance checks.
- Prepare reagents, stock solutions, and laboratory disinfectants as instructed.
- Clean and disinfect equipment and workspaces as required.
- Report any discrepancies to senior staff in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- Assist in maintaining the filing system for slides and blocks.
- Remain aware of and operate within personal technical competencies.
- Propose modifications to protocols and policies when appropriate.
Information Management & Technology
- Operate within established protocols and policies to ensure high-quality data, thereby maintaining the integrity and accuracy of laboratory databases. Identify data quality issues and escalate them to senior staff.
- Attend training on the use of display screen equipment and ensure compliance with best practices.
- Report any non-functional hardware to senior personnel.
- Utilize the laboratory information management system in accordance with authorized protocols, employing the quality management system for read-only access.
- Comply with local and national policies regarding the safe, secure, and confidential processing and storage of patient and laboratory information.
Qualifications
Essential
- GCSE grade C or above in English and Mathematics.
- Understanding of job responsibilities.
- NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification.
Desirable
- Previous experience in a pathology laboratory setting.
- Basic IT skills for data entry related to demographics, requests, and results in Pathology LIMS.
- IBMS NVQ Level 3.
