Background of the Court of Protection Department:

The Court of Protection addresses issues concerning adults who lack the mental capacity to make decisions. This includes determining an individual's capacity and identifying their best interests.

Our Court of Protection team has been acknowledged by The Legal 500 for their commitment to achieving optimal outcomes for clients, demonstrating a significant dedication to their cases. This multidisciplinary team collaborates with experts in various fields, including mental capacity, mental health, community care, and public law.

We are committed to supporting clients and their families, often working with the Official Solicitor on matters related to health, welfare, and financial issues for individuals lacking capacity.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Report directly to the Department Director
  • Maintain a professional and proactive approach with strong client care skills
  • Assist with Court of Protection matters, including personal injury trusts, statutory wills, and deputyship applications
  • Engage with clients, gather instructions, and prepare cases
  • Manage correspondence and maintain accurate time costing procedures
  • Implement recommendations from monthly file reviews promptly
  • Ensure compliance with file management protocols
Essential Skills:
  • Passion and experience in publicly funded Court of Protection work
  • Strong academic background with a Law degree
  • Previous legal experience as a Court of Protection Paralegal or Advisor
  • Clear understanding of Court of Protection processes
  • Business acumen and ability to promote the firm
  • Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with diverse individuals
  • Strong written communication and drafting abilities
  • Analytical and organizational skills with the ability to work independently while knowing when to seek guidance
  • A committed team player, self-motivated, and professional
  • Proficient IT skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and document management systems
