Position: Cancer Diagnostic Nurse at Epsom & St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust

We are pleased to present a remarkable opportunity within the Acute Oncology & Rapid Diagnostic Team at Epsom & St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust. This role is pivotal in managing inpatients exhibiting symptoms suggestive of cancer or those already diagnosed. The Rapid Diagnostic Centre (RDC) focuses on outpatients presenting with ambiguous symptoms, working diligently to diagnose or exclude cancer at the outset and subsequently directing patients to appropriate departments as necessary.

This role is designed to enhance the incumbent's knowledge and skills in cancer diagnostics and treatment, potentially leading to future advancement towards an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary contact for all patients under suspicion or diagnosed with AOS & RDC.
  • Deliver thorough, patient-centered evaluations and care, demonstrating exceptional communication abilities.
  • Provide emotional support, direction, and information to patients and their families.
  • Function autonomously while collaborating effectively within a cohesive team.

About the Team:

The Acute Oncology Service (AOS) team offers expert nursing advice, support, and information to patients who are hospitalized due to cancer treatment or are suspected of having cancer.

The RDC supports established pathways by aiming to exclude a cancer diagnosis within a 28-day timeframe for patients with non-specific symptoms requiring a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. The primary goal is to confirm or rule out cancer as swiftly as possible, ideally within this timeframe.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Registered General Nurse
  • BSc in a Healthcare Related Discipline

Desirable:

  • MSc or ANP in a Healthcare Related Discipline
  • Training in Advanced Communication Skills
  • Level 2 Psychology Support Skills

Experience:

Essential:

  • Relevant recent professional experience

Desirable:

  • Experience in managing patient caseloads

Knowledge:

Essential:

  • Thorough understanding of contemporary cancer practices
  • Awareness of professional issues in nursing and healthcare
  • Proficiency in holistic patient assessment
  • Understanding of clinical governance

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of Quality Improvement methodologies

Skills:

Essential:

  • Proven experience in assessing and coordinating patient investigations in both primary and secondary care settings
  • Effective communication with various departments and healthcare professionals
  • Able to recognize personal practice boundaries
