We are seeking a Service Team Leader to join the central Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) Service on a secondment basis for a duration of up to 12 months to cover maternity leave.
The DoLS Service is responsible for managing Devon County Council's statutory obligations regarding the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards. This encompasses coordinating necessary professional evaluations, addressing any disputes or grievances, and overseeing the growing number of legal challenges presented to The Court of Protection for individuals who object to any Standard Authorisation.
This secondment presents an exciting opportunity to become part of a supportive and dynamic team, enhancing your management capabilities while deepening your practical understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
About the Role:
The individual in this position will oversee the daily management of the service, which includes workflow and referral oversight as well as the direct management of team members. The team will consist of health and social care professionals who are certified Best Interests Assessors, along with the Service Support Manager and a group of DoLS Administrators.
About You:
You must hold a registration as a Social Worker, Registered Nurse, Occupational Therapist, or Chartered Psychologist and have successfully completed your specialized Best Interests Assessor training.
It is essential to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the Mental Capacity Act, the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, current legal precedents, and the interactions with other pertinent legal frameworks.
The legal ramifications of decisions made by the individual in this role can significantly affect the Service user, their families/carers, and the organization. Therefore, the post holder is required to collaborate with the County Solicitor (and other professionals) to ensure that team practices align with current legal standards – or, where ambiguity exists, to facilitate applications to the Court of Protection.
The post holder is expected to advocate for the principles of the Mental Capacity Act through active engagement with professionals, the voluntary sector, and care providers by offering guidance and support, as well as through the development and delivery of training.
Excellent communication skills across all formats (electronic, written, verbal) are crucial, with the ability to tailor messages to suit the audience receiving the information. This role necessitates the capacity to fulfill all spoken aspects of the position with confidence and fluency in English.
