12 Month Secondment Opportunity

We are seeking a Service Team Leader to join the central Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) Service on a secondment basis for a duration of up to 12 months to cover maternity leave.

The DoLS Service is responsible for managing Devon County Council's statutory obligations regarding the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards. This encompasses coordinating necessary professional evaluations, addressing any disputes or grievances, and overseeing the growing number of legal challenges presented to The Court of Protection for individuals who contest any Standard Authorisation.

This secondment presents an exciting opportunity to become part of a supportive and dynamic team, enhancing your management capabilities while deepening your practical understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.

About the Role:

The individual in this position will oversee the daily operations of the service, including managing workflow and referrals, as well as supervising team members. The staff group will include health and social care professionals who are accredited Best Interests Assessors, along with the Service Support Manager and a team of DoLS Administrators.

About You:
You must be a registered Social Worker, Registered Nurse, Occupational Therapist, or a Chartered Psychologist, having successfully completed your specialized Best Interests Assessor training.

A comprehensive understanding of the Mental Capacity Act, the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, current legal precedents, and the connections with other pertinent legal frameworks is essential.

The legal ramifications of decisions made by the individual in this role can significantly affect the Service user, their families/carers, and the organization. Therefore, the post holder is expected to collaborate with the County Solicitor (and other professionals) to ensure that team practices comply with current legal standards – or, where ambiguity exists, to facilitate applications to the Court of Protection.

The post holder is also expected to advocate for the principles of the Mental Capacity Act through active engagement with professionals, the voluntary sector, and care providers by offering guidance and support, as well as through the development and delivery of training.

Effective communication across all formats (electronic, written, verbal) is crucial, with the ability to tailor information to suit the audience. This role requires the capacity to deliver all spoken components of the position with confidence and fluency in English.
