Position Overview

We are seeking to recruit 3 new Clinical Fellow positions to address the growing need for anaesthetic services, particularly in Obstetrics. These roles will encompass a blend of clinical duties, educational responsibilities, and flexible out-of-hours commitments.

Both full-time and part-time arrangements are available.

The duration of the positions may vary, with options for 6 or 12 months.

Clinical specialisation opportunities include:

  • Obstetrics
  • Ophthalmology
  • Gynaecology (including significant gynaecological oncology procedures)
  • ENT/Maxillofacial surgery (covering paediatric cases and complex airway management)
  • Trauma & Orthopaedics (including Regional Anaesthesia)
  • General surgery - upper (including oesophagectomies) and lower GI
  • Urology (involving major urological procedures such as robotic prostatectomies, cystectomies, and both open and laparoscopic nephrectomies)

We can accommodate single or multiple clinical specialities.

This role presents an excellent opportunity for:

  1. Individuals nearing their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) who wish to pursue advanced training in their chosen specialty or specialties before applying for a permanent consultant role.
  2. Early-career anaesthetists looking to enhance their CV in preparation for Specialist Trainee (Stage 2) interviews. Our institution offers a robust junior anaesthetic teaching program and has a proven history of successfully preparing juniors for training rotations.

Key Responsibilities

Each Clinical Fellow will be assigned an Educational Supervisor, ensuring regular consultations to tailor developmental needs. You will be integrated into the department, receiving the same teaching opportunities as other trainees, with solo lists designed to meet your developmental requirements if you are post-CCT.

Clinical Fellows will have the chance to participate in all mandatory training sessions, monthly audit meetings, and weekly departmental continuing professional development (CPD) activities, including Journal Club, Morbidity & Mortality meetings, and Departmental Teaching.

Professional development opportunities will be available, particularly for those preparing for higher examinations or seeking additional experience in their areas of interest.

Involvement in audits, quality improvement initiatives, research, and teaching (including simulation) will also be encouraged.

The Department and Trust will support study leave, allowing up to 30 days every three years.

The anaesthetic services are overseen by the Specialty Director, Dr. Mark Eveleigh.

The anaesthetic team comprises:

  • 2 primary sites
  • Peripheral sites
  • 54 General Consultants
  • 18 Critical Care Consultants
  • 2 qualified Advanced Critical Care Practitioners (ACCPs) and 3 ACCP trainees
  • 17 Specialty Doctors
  • 63 Trainees

Our facilities include:

  • Multiple general theatres, including those dedicated to major urology and gynaecological oncology
  • Elective orthopaedic theatres
  • Eye theatres with newly opened day surgery theatres
  • Theatres for general, trauma, and back surgery, as well as maxillofacial, ENT, emergencies, and obstetrics

We also offer pre-assessment clinics, remote site working, ECHO sessions, and pain services, both acute and chronic.
