Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Laboratory Support Assistant to join our Histology team at Unilabs. As a Laboratory Support Assistant, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our laboratory, providing support to our Histology staff, and contributing to the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Specimen Management: Sort and book in specimens in the cut-up room, ensuring accurate and timely processing.
  • Assistance with Cut-Up: Assist with the cut-up process as needed, working closely with the Head MLA and BMS.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform daily maintenance and reagent changes on processors and embedding machines, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.
  • Solution Preparation: Prepare solutions as necessary to support laboratory operations.
  • Transportation and Logistics: Prepare stock transport boxes for delivery and ensure timely transportation of specimens.
  • Quality Control: Conduct chuck-out procedures to maintain high-quality standards.
  • Cleanliness and Organization: Ensure the cut-up room is clean and organized, maintaining a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Additional Tasks: Perform other tasks as required to support the department, including rotating into the main laboratory to assist with routine duties and helping with NHS work as needed.

Requirements:

  • Education: Biomedical Science-related degree or equivalent experience.
  • Time Management and Organization: Ability to manage own time and tasks effectively.
  • Technical Skills: Ability to learn and implement techniques successfully, with basic user knowledge of I.T systems.
  • Communication and Teamwork: Ability to work well with others, relate to colleagues, and participate in an annual joint staff review.

Experience and Knowledge:

  • Laboratory Experience: Experience in laboratory work, preferably in a histology setting.
  • IT Systems: Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems.
  • Company Policies: Understanding of company health and safety and confidentiality policies, with an aptitude to follow company procedures.

  • Teamwork and Flexibility: Ability to work well in a team, be flexible, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Tidiness and Cleanliness: Maintain a tidy and clean working environment.

  • Availability: Ability to work one Saturday a month with an alternative day off in the week.
