Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Respiratory Nurse Specialist to join our team at Brownlow Group Practice. As a Specialist Practitioner, you will work across the four pillars of advanced practice, leading and delivering Nurse-led respiratory clinics for patients in our practice.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver Nurse-led respiratory clinics to support the Practice Nurse team
  • Review patients with asthma and COPD using relevant EMIS clinical templates to ensure assessments are completed and coded to meet QOF requirements
  • Use non-medical prescribing to review medications, including maintenance therapy and acute self-management plans
  • Assess inhaler technique and optimize inhaler therapy, giving consideration to greener respiratory care such as low-carbon inhalers, over-usage, and over-prescribing
  • Provide a written personalized asthma/COPD action plan
  • Review patients admitted to an emergency care setting with an acute asthma attack or exacerbation of COPD within 2 working days of discharge
  • Review patients admitted to hospital with symptoms of breathlessness related to any other underlying respiratory problem or LRTI
  • Ensure patients coded COPD have had spirometry performed to confirm diagnosis
  • Ability to interpret spirometry testing as required
  • First contact assessment, examination, and management of patients presenting with acute respiratory problems, including potential COVID-19 symptoms
  • Review patients diagnosed/suspected with long COVID
  • Administration of relevant health prevention vaccinations
  • Provide home visits to ensure our housebound respiratory patients receive a timely review
  • Request and interpret relevant blood tests and investigations
  • Build links with and liaise with secondary care and community services
  • Work within national guidelines, policies, and procedures, as well as local protocols, supporting the development of these in-house as needed to ensure the patient receives the highest quality evidence-based care
  • Maintain effective communication with patients, carers, relatives, and members of the multidisciplinary team, ensuring information is shared appropriately
