Job Overview

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) plays a pivotal role in the UK's diplomatic, developmental, and consular efforts globally. With a dedicated workforce of approximately 17,000 professionals across 281 international offices, we are committed to addressing global health challenges.

Position Summary

Primary Objective

The ideal candidate will spearhead initiatives to bolster FCDO's internal capabilities in managing disease outbreaks. This role is crucial for executing the FCDO's strategy for pandemic preparedness. Responsibilities will include:

  • Offering immediate support, either virtually or on-site, to our international network as needed.
  • Enhancing FCDO's expertise in disease management.
  • Delivering technical guidance to ensure FCDO's operational readiness.

Collaboration with colleagues throughout the FCDO, particularly those focused on Africa, will be essential. You will receive support from the Head of Health Profession and work closely with a 50-member health advisory team. Access to a variety of technical and professional development resources will be provided.

The successful candidate must demonstrate flexibility in adapting to shifting priorities, contributing to our goal of building resilience within the department, and offering technical advice to the broader team as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be tasked with:

  • Providing expert guidance to implement FCDO's preparedness strategies for responding to significant disease outbreaks or pandemics, ensuring readiness for various emergency situations.
  • Delivering technical assistance to our international network, including virtual or immediate support for disease prevention, preparedness, control, or mitigation efforts. This may involve evaluating a country's response and shaping the UK's approach as appropriate.
  • Leading the development of FCDO's proficiency in disease management for diverse audiences, including in-country health advisors and our internal health network.
  • Promoting awareness of pandemic preparedness plans throughout FCDO.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of global health surveillance.
  • Providing expertise during major crises at relevant FCDO forums.

The candidate may be required to support the international network during disease outbreaks, potentially for two to three weeks, up to three times annually.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications

  • Strong organizational skills and resilience to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with the ability to research, benchmark, design, implement, and evaluate options under tight deadlines.
  • Strategic insight and sound judgment regarding international disease outbreak responses and pandemics, with the capacity to take initiative in collaboration with others.
  • Experience in emergency response within a global health context.
  • Background in disease control at the country level, with knowledge or experience at the global level.
  • Proficiency in epidemiology, including the use of disease data collection tools and national disease management responses.
  • Understanding of the global health security landscape.
  • Experience addressing the broader determinants of health and health improvement.
