PhD Studentship in AI-Driven Codon Usage Research
1 month ago
The University of Cambridge is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our research group and work on a project entitled "Unlocking the Code within the Code: Using AI to decipher the role of codon usage in protein synthesis and gene regulation". This project aims to unravel the underlying mechanism by which codon-level information regulates translation using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques.
Research GroupOur group uses computational methods to study the inner workings and control of biological systems. We have a strong track record of publishing high-impact papers and have developed novel computational tools for analyzing biological data.
Project DetailsThe genetic code contains 61 codons encoding 20 amino acids, and most amino acids are therefore encoded by two or more 'synonymous' codons. Despite producing the same protein, the choice of one synonymous codon over another plays an important role in gene regulation. This project will use AI to study the regulation of translation and identify the underlying mechanisms.
MethodologyWe will use cutting-edge deep learning techniques, such as foundation models, to address the challenge of making models that accurately capture the complexities of biological systems. Our group has extensive experience in developing and applying AI techniques to biological problems, and we will provide the successful candidate with the necessary training and support to develop their skills in this area.
RequirementsWe welcome applications from recent graduates or final-year undergraduates who hold or expect to gain a First/Upper Second Class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject from any recognised university worldwide. The successful candidate will have a strong background in computer science, mathematics, or a related field, and excellent programming skills.
What We OfferThe University of Cambridge offers a competitive stipend and a comprehensive benefits package, including access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work with a world-leading research group and contribute to the development of novel AI techniques for biological research.
