Nuclear Safety Inspector

Job Overview
The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) operates as an independent regulatory body, separate from the Civil Service, and is aligned with the Department of Work and Pensions.
Career Opportunity
In line with our strategic vision for 2025, ONR is dedicated to evolving into a modern and transparent regulatory authority, ensuring reliable outcomes and value. We are investing significantly in innovative digital technologies and skill enhancement to improve our regulatory frameworks and information management.
As the UK's independent nuclear regulator, our mission is crucial for national safety and security. We safeguard society by ensuring safe operations at nuclear facilities throughout the country.
This role is pivotal in supporting the UK's decarbonisation efforts, national defense, and the decommissioning of our nuclear heritage. A position with ONR offers the chance to influence and shape the future application of nuclear technology in our society.
Position Responsibilities
As an inspector, your responsibilities will be diverse, encompassing various roles within the sector. You may oversee the regulation of new nuclear constructions or the decommissioning of existing facilities. Some inspectors focus on conducting planned and reactive site inspections, while others evaluate safety submissions or manage specific intervention projects. Opportunities may also arise for conducting investigations, overseeing research initiatives, and mentoring the next generation of inspectors.
In your capacity as an internal hazards specialist inspector, you will evaluate hazards (to plant or safety-related structures) that arise within the site boundaries and are influenced by events that the site operator can control. Internal hazards encompass risks such as internal fires, flooding, explosions, dropped loads, pipe whip, jet impact, and internal missiles, among others. A primary concern for all nuclear sites is fire safety. Evaluating how fires could jeopardize nuclear plants and safety equipment, as well as the effectiveness of measures to prevent fire spread and mitigate consequences, is of utmost importance. The regulatory focus on internal hazards differs from general fire safety in that it assesses the adequacy of the operator's safety case and its implementation regarding fires with potential radiological impacts. Your expertise as an internal hazards inspector will ensure that safety cases comprehensively address a full spectrum of potential internal hazards, and that duty holders implement appropriate measures to mitigate them and protect plant integrity.
Management Responsibilities
Currently, there are no direct line management responsibilities; however, future expectations may include managing staff at this level.
Work Culture
Our team comprises individuals from diverse backgrounds, each bringing unique experiences and career paths to ONR. We seek the most qualified candidates for our roles. As an inclusive employer, we value diversity in age, gender, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, social background, religion, or belief. Our principles of being supportive, open-minded, fair, and accountable are fundamental to our culture. We invest in our people to enhance capability, resilience, and promote well-being within our teams, grounded in our commitment to inclusion and excellence.
Qualifications and Skills Required
Educational Background
All Nuclear Safety Inspectors are expected to possess:
- A degree-level qualification or equivalent in engineering, physical sciences, mathematics, or a related field, or the ability to demonstrate equivalent professional performance and experience.
- Chartered membership of a relevant professional institution, or the ability to demonstrate equivalent professional performance and/or experience.
Essential Experience and Skills
- Prior experience in internal hazards within the nuclear sector or a similar field, including safety case development, assessment, and physical inspections.
- A solid background in evaluating complex safety systems designed with multiple protective measures against internal hazards.
- Experience in implementing safety solutions in hazardous industries, with extensive knowledge of relevant safety standards and engineering principles.
- Familiarity with one or more nuclear or high-hazard facilities, such as pressurized water reactors, advanced gas-cooled reactors, or high-hazard processing plants.
- The ability to assimilate, analyze, and provide clear judgments on new and complex technical issues.
- Strong communication, decision-making, and influencing abilities, with a capacity to prioritize work based on risk assessment.
While experience in the nuclear sector or a high-hazard industry is preferred, we welcome applicants from non-nuclear backgrounds who are willing to undertake a structured nuclear training program to achieve Nuclear Safety Inspector status (subject to an alternative salary range during training).
Commitment to Inclusion
ONR is dedicated to fostering an inclusive workplace and encourages applications from all individuals. We will make reasonable adjustments to ensure an inclusive and barrier-free recruitment process. For instance, we can provide job descriptions in various formats and offer communication support and accessible venues. If you require assistance, please reach out to us for further information on reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process. We guarantee interviews for disabled candidates who meet the minimum criteria for the role. Applicants can also opt into our Guaranteed Interview Scheme when submitting their application.
ONR acknowledges its responsibility to support veterans transitioning from the Armed Forces and has implemented a Guaranteed Interview Scheme for veterans as part of a government initiative aimed at creating a supportive work environment for them. Veterans who meet the minimum criteria for a role will be invited for an interview and can choose to participate in this scheme during their application process. To qualify for roles under this initiative, veterans must meet specific eligibility criteria.
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must possess or be able to obtain and maintain National Security Vetting clearance at SC level.
Location and Travel Requirements
This position can be based at any ONR office location. The role involves some travel, including overnight stays primarily within the United Kingdom and occasionally abroad.
A valid driving license permitting the holder to drive in the UK is required unless reasonable adjustments can be made under the Equality Act 2010.
ONR supports hybrid working arrangements as part of our flexible working policy, expecting employees to spend some time in the office regularly, recognizing that certain tasks are more effectively accomplished in person. Managers will collaborate with their teams to determine the best approach to meet individual, team, business, and organizational needs while balancing personal choice and well-being.
Employee Benefits
Employees are entitled to an annual leave allowance of 25 days plus 8 public holidays, with an additional privilege day. The annual leave allowance increases by one day each year, up to a maximum of 30 days.
- Tailored learning and development opportunities
- Flexible working environment
- A culture that promotes inclusion and diversity
