Position Overview

The North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Locum Consultant in Gastroenterology to enhance our team of Consultant Gastroenterologists and Gastrointestinal surgeons. This role is integral to delivering a comprehensive digestive health service throughout the region.

Service Structure

The North Cumbria GI Service represents a newly formed, unified department that merges gastroenterology and endoscopy services, along with upper gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, colorectal, and emergency GI surgical care.

Team Collaboration

The successful candidate will collaborate with a skilled group of gastroenterologists, supported by specialized nursing staff in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and hepatology. As part of our service transformation, we anticipate that future arrangements will centralize complex inpatient care at designated sites, while elective outpatient services, including endoscopy and clinics, will be distributed across the Trust.

General Responsibilities

All team members will be expected to engage in various aspects of the general gastroenterology service across the Trust, despite being assigned to a primary unit.

Facilities and Resources

The department is equipped with two dedicated GI wards located within the Cumberland Infirmary for inpatient care. Plans are underway to co-locate all GI services for enhanced efficiency. The Trust features a specialized 3-room endoscopy unit at the Cumberland Infirmary, alongside a new state-of-the-art endoscopy facility at another location.

Future Developments

We are excited to announce that the Trust has secured funding for a new 5-room Endoscopy Unit, which is scheduled to commence operations in the near future.

Job Responsibilities

The role includes an on-call commitment for Out of Hours GI Bleed coverage, with a standard job plan encompassing 10-12 Programmed Activities (PAs).

Relocation Support

Relocation assistance of up to £4,000 may be available for successful candidates relocating to the area.

Recruitment Premium

This position currently offers a discretionary recruitment premium of up to 10% of the basic salary per annum, which is pensionable and subject to annual review.

Person Specification

Education & Qualifications

Essential:

  • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
  • Royal College Membership
  • Experience as a Consultant, SAS Doctor, or General Practitioner

Desirable:

  • Management Qualification or equivalent experience
  • CCT or equivalent
  • Registration on the GMC Specialist Register
