Job Overview
North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Locum Consultant in Gastroenterology to become part of our esteemed team of gastroenterologists and gastrointestinal surgeons. This role is pivotal in delivering a comprehensive digestive health service throughout the region. The North Cumbria GI Service represents a newly formed, integrated department that unifies gastroenterology and endoscopy services, as well as upper gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, colorectal, and emergency GI surgical care.
The ideal candidate will collaborate with a skilled team of gastroenterologists, supported by specialized nursing staff in IBD and hepatology. As we evolve our services across the Trust, we anticipate that future arrangements will centralize complex inpatient care at one site, while elective outpatient services, including endoscopy and clinics, will be accessible across the Trust. We encourage subspecialty interests that align with the department's and Trust's service requirements.
Although appointees will have a designated base unit, all team members are expected to engage in various aspects of the general gastroenterology service across the Trust.
Key Responsibilities
The department features two dedicated GI wards within the Cumberland Infirmary for inpatient care. Plans are underway to co-locate all GI services in the near future. A specialized 3-room endoscopy unit is available at The Cumberland Infirmary, and a new endoscopy facility at West Cumberland Hospital boasts two state-of-the-art rooms. Both sites are equipped with specialized GI physiology laboratories.
Recently, the Trust has secured funding for a new 5-room Endoscopy Unit, scheduled to open in the near future at the Cumberland Infirmary.

Job Duties
The on-call responsibilities include Out of Hours GI Bleed coverage. The standard job plan comprises 10-12 Programmed Activities (PAs).
Relocation assistance of up to £4,000 may be available for successful candidates relocating to the area.
Recruitment Incentives
This position currently offers a discretionary recruitment premium of up to 10% (based on basic salary) per annum. This premium is pensionable, payable for up to four years, and is subject to annual review by the Trust.

Qualifications and Experience
Essential Requirements
- MBBS, MBChB, or equivalent qualification
- Full GMC or GDC registration
- Membership of a Royal College
- Experience as a Consultant, SAS Doctor, or General Practitioner
- Registration on the GMC Specialist Register
Desirable Qualifications
- Management qualification or equivalent evidence portfolio
- CCT or equivalent
