Advanced Respiratory Physiotherapy Specialist

Torquay, Torbay, United Kingdom Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity has emerged to become a vital member of the Respiratory Physiotherapy Team within the Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, focusing on delivering specialized Respiratory Physiotherapy in an Advanced Practitioner capacity. This role encompasses responsibilities across various settings, including acute care and community services, providing advanced practice in Respiratory Physiotherapy.

The successful candidate will engage in clinical practice within virtual wards, outpatient clinics, community settings, and acute hospital wards. An accredited ACP qualification is essential, or the ability to obtain one, enabling the practitioner to operate independently in the assessment and management of complex respiratory patients.

This position collaborates closely with the Acute Physiotherapy Team, community therapy and nursing teams, multidisciplinary teams (MDT), and Respiratory consultants. The role will contribute to the enhancement of strategic leadership and clinical governance throughout the Respiratory Physiotherapy pathways for patients in the South Devon area. The Advanced Practitioner will utilize independent judgment to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate the clinical care and management of patients with respiratory conditions.

Main Responsibilities

The post holder will adhere to the Trust Framework for Advanced Practice and:

  • Function as a high-level practitioner with advanced clinical skills within an interdepartmental team, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive, timely, and high-quality clinical care.
  • Exhibit advanced clinical expertise, exercising judgment, discretion, and decision-making in clinical care while maintaining a professional portfolio that supports their scope of practice, particularly in airways clearance and the management of breathing pattern disorders.

Leadership Role

  • Provide leadership across the Respiratory Physiotherapy pathway, from initial contact through the entire local clinical pathways.

This role will serve in a trust-wide leadership capacity, ensuring that evidence-based practice and the delivery of respiratory physiotherapy are coordinated, efficient, and appropriate. This includes collaboration with all relevant respiratory pathways and broader MDT services, including intensive care, community therapy, stroke, neuro community nurses/matrons, and associated services for pediatric and learning disability support.

About the Organization

The Physiotherapy service and the respiratory medicine service work in close partnership, offering support to patients with diverse respiratory conditions across various settings, including acute medical wards, respiratory outpatient services, virtual wards, and community services. The virtual ward initiative aims to strengthen the connection between acute and community services, facilitating patient discharge and preventing unnecessary hospital admissions.

This position will be based across the acute hospital physiotherapy department, outpatient services, virtual wards, and community teams, which may involve working within patients' usual or temporary living environments.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Degree in Physiotherapy
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

Desirable:

  • Master's degree or ACP qualification in Respiratory Physiotherapy
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification

Knowledge and Skills

Essential:

  • Significant experience as a Band 6 Respiratory Physiotherapist within the NHS
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities
  • Evidence of advanced assessment and treatment skills in Respiratory Physiotherapy

Desirable:

  • Experience as a Band 7 Respiratory Physiotherapist
