Overview

The Scottish Government's Inspectorate of Prisons is an autonomous entity tasked with the evaluation and oversight of Scotland's correctional facilities. This role is pivotal in assessing the treatment and living conditions of inmates, as well as publicly reporting on these findings, including the circumstances under which prisoners are transported or held during escort arrangements.

The Chief Inspector of Prisons is supported by a diverse team including a deputy, thematic lead inspector, prison inspectors, regional coordinators, and various administrative and operational staff. This position is integral to the team, providing essential support primarily to the Inspector of Prisons and the Business Manager. Key responsibilities involve collaboration with volunteers, stakeholders, relevant government officials, external organizations, and colleagues within the Inspectorate.

Key Responsibilities

Inspection Duties

• Collaborate with the Lead Inspector and Business Manager in the planning stages of upcoming inspections.

• Participate as a member of the pre-inspection survey team and assist during inspections as needed.

• Aid the Business Manager in organizing inspections and managing the resultant reports.
Administrative Functions

• Maintain the Inspectorate's website, ensuring that publications and news updates are current.

• Provide administrative assistance for internal meetings, including scheduling, distributing agendas, and documenting minutes and action points.
Additional Responsibilities

• Serve as the EPC card holder.

• Process and manage purchase orders for the team through the designated procurement system.

• Offer support to the Social Researcher and Thematic Lead Inspector as necessary.

Work Location:
This role is based in Edinburgh, with options for hybrid working arrangements in accordance with current government policies.

The successful candidate will be expected to remain in this position for a minimum of three years unless promoted to a higher grade.
