Position Overview

We are seeking applications for the role of Specialist Physician in Emergency and Pulmonary Medicine at North Tees & Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will become an integral part of our dynamic and dedicated emergency and pulmonary teams, delivering clinical services within the Emergency Care and Pulmonary Medicine departments while also participating in the General Internal Medicine on-call duties.

The selected individual will collaborate with a well-established group of consultants and junior staff, managing the Acute Medical intake, with scheduled daytime contributions to the acute medical unit and a commitment to the general medical rota, which includes weekend duties and daytime cover for the Physician of the week. This arrangement will be part of the overall job plan and will include a 3% availability supplement. Separate rotas are in place for GI bleeding and Stroke management. A sample weekly schedule is available for reference.

The pulmonary aspect of the role will focus on outpatient care, engaging with existing community pulmonary teams and virtual ward initiatives.

The appointee will be expected to actively participate in local postgraduate educational activities, including journal clubs, audits, clinical case presentations, and teaching sessions.

This is a newly created position based within the University Hospital of North Tees, with office space and administrative support provided, along with access to computer and internet facilities.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of the Specialist Physician in Emergency and Pulmonary Medicine include the following:

Clinical Duties

  • Assist in delivering medical specialties and care for patients in the Emergency Assessment Unit and Assessment area.
  • Provide outpatient care for patients in the Lung Health department, catering to both new and routine follow-up patients.
  • Offer clinical leadership in developing the Respiratory Virtual Ward.
  • Take accountability for actions and decisions within the agreed empowerment limits set by the Acute and Pulmonary Consultant Teams and Clinical Director.
  • Contribute to service and staff development, including teaching medical undergraduates and training doctors.
  • Engage in departmental audits, research, and initiatives aimed at enhancing patient safety and quality.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary for the efficient operation of the service, adapting to the evolving service needs.
  • Provide coverage for colleagues during standard leave periods.
  • Supervise and manage junior medical staff professionally.
  • Allocate remaining professional time flexibly across clinical duties, administration, teaching, research, and clinical audits.
  • Contribute to achieving the Trust's Strategic Objectives.

Quality and Patient Safety / Audit

The appointee will play an active role in quality and patient safety practices. Weekly Quality and Patient Safety meetings are held, and the Clinical Effectiveness Unit plays a vital role in audits. The Trust conducts weekly Safety Panel Meetings alongside monthly Audit and Clinical Effectiveness and Safety and Quality Standard meetings.

Additionally, the appointee is expected to:

  • Maintain high-quality services for patients, focusing on patient safety through continuous practice development based on research evidence and relevant standards.
  • Engage in pertinent Quality Improvement projects.
  • Adhere to all Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene and environmental hygiene.
  • Complete annual training and updates in infection prevention and control.
  • Prepare for and execute protective interventions responsibly, consistent with evidence-based practices and patient safety.
  • Implement the Trust's Risk Management strategy and understand its implications within the work area.
  • Comply with Blood Transfusion policies to ensure safe services for patients.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • GMC Registration
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • CCT (or equivalent) in the chosen medical specialty (within 6 months)
  • CCT (or equivalent) in GIM / Acute Medicine / Pulmonary Medicine

Desirable Qualifications

  • Ultrasound accreditation
  • Diploma-level qualification in a specialty

Essential Experience

  • Clinical skills in Acute or Pulmonary Medicine equivalent to level 2 of the Acute Medicine curriculum
  • Experience in clinical audits
  • Involvement in patient safety initiatives

Desirable Experience

  • Experience managing the 'acute take' in the UK at a consultant level
  • Intensive Care Unit experience
  • Background in service improvement
