Position Overview

This role presents a unique opportunity to create and enhance an internal employment legal service within the organization. The service will encompass all facets of employment law, fostering direct collaboration with colleagues in the Human Resources department. The successful candidate will:

Provide legal guidance on both contentious and non-contentious employment law issues, working closely with the Employee Relations team.

Assist in the formulation of effective employment processes and documentation.

Mitigate legal, financial, and reputational risks by enhancing the organization's analysis, preparation, and response to employment-related matters.

Collaborate with the Director of Legal Services and the Chief People Officer to optimize external legal expenditures.

Key Responsibilities

By delivering high-quality, customized employment law counsel, the individual will:

Support the efficient management of resources.

Encourage the advancement of performance and service delivery across all departments within the organization.

Contribute to the strategic objectives of the organization's people strategy, maintaining oversight and advising on legal risks and responsibilities related to personnel matters.

Provide employment law-related advice and assist in the development of guidance and policies.

Aim to minimize external legal costs by offering tailored, in-house employment law support.

Engage in broader legal and governance workflows and assurance processes.

Manage relationships with external legal advisors to ensure optimal value and quality, in conjunction with the Human Resources Advisory team. This includes ensuring that legal counsel is provided within agreed financial parameters.

Contribute to service improvement initiatives within the organization and the wider Integrated Care System by proactively offering early, solution-oriented advice on both contentious and non-contentious employment law matters.

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this role, candidates must possess:

  • A qualified solicitor, barrister, legal executive, or equivalent legal experience.
  • Significant relevant post-qualification professional experience, demonstrating continued professional development and additional qualifications.

Desirable Qualifications

In-house legal experience, preferably within the healthcare sector.

  • Specialized knowledge and understanding of employment law.
  • Experience in preparing written reports and delivering presentations to inform various stakeholders, including senior management and Human Resources.
  • Experience managing contentious and non-contentious employment matters, including case management and representation in legal proceedings.
  • Experience conducting investigations into serious allegations.
