Position Overview
We are looking for a dedicated and proactive Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) to become a vital member of our IPC team. The IPC CNS will collaborate with healthcare professionals across various sites to enhance IPC practices and minimize the risk of hospital-acquired infections.
The successful candidate will offer leadership, mentorship, and management support to junior team members, as well as provide peer assistance to fellow Band 7 IPC CNSs.
This role necessitates teamwork with the IPC team and all healthcare staff within the organization. Working closely with IPC Consultant Nurses, Senior Nurses, IPC CNSs, and the Director of Infection Prevention & Control (DIPC), the post holder will influence IPC policies and guidelines, ensuring their effective application in practice.
The IPC service encompasses the comprehensive management of isolation prioritization to facilitate patient flow while ensuring safety. The role involves collaboration with operational services to assess and advise on decontamination, compliance with building regulations, and the creation of educational and audit programs across the Trust.
The post holder will allocate approximately 70% of their time to clinical areas, focusing on education, training, and advisory services, while dedicating 30% to project work and classroom-based teaching initiatives.
Main Responsibilities
The key responsibilities of this position include:
- Implementing a proactive approach to the prevention, surveillance, investigation, and management of infections. This includes reviewing, formulating, and educating on evidence-based IPC practices in alignment with national and organizational policies.
- Providing expert guidance to multidisciplinary colleagues, patients, and caregivers regarding infection prevention.
- Contributing to the development and execution of strategies aimed at reducing infection rates.
- Collaborating with clinical teams to ensure compliance with infection prevention protocols.
- Leading clinical audit processes, including evaluation and dissemination of findings.
- Designing and delivering educational programs for all healthcare disciplines.
- Acting as a strong advocate for patients, demonstrating compassionate leadership and ensuring that patient care adheres to best clinical practices.
- Overseeing the daily operations of the IPC team under the guidance of Senior IPC Nurses.

Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
- NMC registration
- Postgraduate qualification in Infection Prevention and Control and/or a minimum of 2 years of experience in an IPC team
- Progressing towards an MSc in Infection Prevention and Control or equivalent
- Mentorship qualification (SSSA)
Desirable:
- Participation in leadership development programs
- Management development experience
