Norwich, Norfolk, United Kingdom Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Full time

Position Overview

The Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital is seeking dedicated Band 5 Registered Nurses and Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) to enhance our Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) team on fixed-term contracts.

PACU is strategically located within the Main Theatre Suite, featuring 24 bays, including 4 designated for paediatric care. Our unit also collaborates with the Day Procedure Unit, Obstetric Theatres, MRI/CT services for patients post-general anaesthesia, and the Brachytherapy Suite. As a vital member of a multi-disciplinary team, you will provide care for both adult and paediatric patients during their immediate recovery phase following anaesthesia or surgery.

We offer a comprehensive orientation program where new team members will work in a supernumerary capacity alongside a designated mentor until they demonstrate the ability to work independently. Our Education Facilitator will provide ongoing support, and we offer in-service training days focusing on recovery practices, along with innovative opportunities such as simulation training. We encourage all staff to pursue professional development, and we look forward to seeing your commitment to growth in your application.

As a teaching hospital, we support nursing and ODP students from both adult and child branches in partnership with the University of East Anglia. Our mentorship program has been recognized for excellence in student support.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will deliver a high standard of patient care within a safe clinical environment. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the post-anaesthetic and post-operative care of adult and paediatric patients, utilizing your initiative to assess, plan, and implement care interventions.
  • Assuming autonomous responsibility for patient care following handover from the anaesthetist and surgical team.
  • Collaborating with anaesthetists, consultants, and multi-disciplinary care teams.
  • Demonstrating expertise in caring for unconscious patients, particularly in basic and advanced airway management.
  • Monitoring physiological parameters through both non-invasive and invasive techniques.
  • Providing extended care for high-dependency patients post-operatively, ensuring stabilization before transfer to higher care units.
  • Coordinating recovery satellite areas during emergency situations, supporting staff, patients, and families.
