The salary for this position is £54,376 (including a Market Premium Payment (MPP)).

This position requires candidates to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), which includes The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.

Position Responsibilities

As the Lead Advanced Visualization Scientist, you will be instrumental in the Data Solutions team at UKAEA, which engages in support, research, and development across various domains such as cloud computing, high-performance computing, algorithm development, engineering and scientific computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and Exascale technologies.

Our work is at the cutting edge of engineering and science, ensuring that fusion reactors are comprehensively understood and effectively engineered, with our research directly informing engineering initiatives. We are currently in search of professionals for Advanced Visualization roles to contribute to multiple projects, offering software development, data analysis, and user support.

You will also collaborate with partners to ensure access to premier facilities and assist in the preparation of reports, actively addressing user requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate within a team to enhance the development of Advanced Visualization tools and explore innovative methods to elevate visualization and analytical capabilities for experiments on JET, MAST-U, and other fusion devices.
  • Utilize modern tools and visualization techniques in partnership with HPC and AI specialists.
  • Assist the team lead in executing advanced visualization tasks and mentoring junior staff members.
  • Contribute to the documentation of results and outreach efforts both internally and externally.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's or Doctorate degree in computational, mathematical, or physical sciences.
  • Experience in scientific or 3D visualization is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in popular visualization frameworks such as Kitware-Paraview, Omniverse, Blender, or Unity.
  • Expertise in 3D modeling software including Autodesk Maya, Blender, or 3ds Max.
  • Outstanding artistic and creative skills, with a robust portfolio showcasing proficiency in 3D modeling, texturing, and environment design.
  • Extensive experience in computer graphics, including knowledge of rendering techniques, shading languages, and graphics APIs (e.g., OpenGL, DirectX, Vulkan).
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, C++, CUDA, or VTK.
  • Familiarity with visualization-relevant data formats and proficiency in data conversion (e.g., VTK, VDB, USD, HDF5).
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and the capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the capability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with machine learning frameworks and their application in computer graphics and computing systems.
  • Knowledge of high-performance computing, distributed computing, or cloud-based architectures.
  • Hands-on experience with Nvidia Omniverse SDKs, PIXAR's Universal Scene Description (USD).
  • Familiarity with real-time rendering engines such as Nvidia Omniverse, Unreal, or Unity Engine, as well as visualization techniques for PIXAR's Universal Scene Description (USD).
  • Experience with real-time data visualization tools like Grafana, Kibana, or other open-source dashboarding solutions.
  • Experience in developing and utilizing digital twins for simulation and analysis of real-world systems and processes.
  • Contributions to open-source projects or published research in relevant fields.
