We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Materials Scientist to join our team at the UK Atomic Energy Authority. As a key member of our Materials Science and Engineering team, you will play a pivotal role in the development of novel fusion-relevant steel alloys.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in materials science and engineering, with expertise in microstructural characterization and radiation damage. You will be responsible for organizing and coordinating research projects, arranging specimen and data procurement, and delivering high-quality research results.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in UKAEA's research programs on materials for fusion, organizing and coordinating short- and long-term projects.
  • Deliver high-quality research or engineering in the field of nuclear materials through own endeavour and creative input.
  • Compile and present results within technical reports, at scientific conferences, and through publication of high-quality research articles.
  • Work with external collaborators to complement UKAEA's internal capability.
  • Contribute to the development and positive reinforcement of UKAEA's knowledge base, design rules, and practices in the area of materials and nuclear physics research and development.
  • Contribute to bids for and delivery of novel projects aligned with internal strategy.
Requirements
  • Degree in material science or equivalent.
  • Excellent skills in microstructural characterization, particularly via transmission electron microscopy.
  • Postgraduate research in materials science demonstrated through work experience or a MSc/PhD degree.
  • Research experience in nuclear materials science and/or in steel alloy development.
