Job Title: Chief Scientific Adviser

MI5 is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Scientific Adviser to join our team. As a key member of our organization, you will play a critical role in providing strategic advice on national security science and technology.

About the Role

The Chief Scientific Adviser will be responsible for leading on advice and delivery of science and technology for the three security and intelligence agencies. This includes overseeing UKIC's major S&T transformation effort via the Science, Technology and Engineering Programme (STEP).

You will work closely with the Government Chief Scientific Adviser's team to provide strategic advice on national security S&T in HMG and the wider national security community. You will engage widely with academia, international partners, and industry to access and influence the best thinking and innovation to address national security problems.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide strategic S&T advice to the three intelligence agency heads and work in partnership with their leadership teams.
  2. Advise on the direction of the agencies' organisational strategies and their collaboration initiatives, particularly in the areas of data, technology, and innovation.
  3. Develop understanding of the international S&T landscape to help shape UK national security thinking, identify opportunities, and build collaboration with international partners.
  4. Support, coordinate, and ensure the coherence of S&T research and development programmes across the community.
  5. Sponsor innovation, including engagement with the National Security Strategic Investment Fund (NSSIF).
  6. Oversee the MI5, SIS, and GCHQ Scientific Advisory Council.
  7. Support relevant S&T professions across the agencies, being an advocate for staff and supporting their professional development and careers.
  8. Represent the GCSA and national security science in a range of HMG fora.
  9. Provide linkage to, and insight from, world-leading research groups, academia, and industry, and build an external network of scientific/research expertise.
  10. Engage thoroughly with the Government Chief Scientific Adviser and the Chief Scientific Advisers network.
  11. Excellence in communication, able to connect across science, mission, and policy communities.

Terms of Appointment

A fixed term appointment of three years with the potential to be extended up to five years.
