Job Title: Chief Scientific Adviser

MI5 is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Scientific Adviser to lead our science and technology efforts in national security.

About the Role

The Chief Scientific Adviser will provide strategic advice to the three intelligence agency heads and work in partnership with their leadership teams to drive our major transformation effort. This includes overseeing the Science, Technology and Engineering Programme (STEP) and developing understanding of the international S&T landscape to help shape UK national security thinking.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide strategic S&T advice to the three intelligence agency heads and work in partnership with their leadership teams.
  2. Advising on the direction of the agencies' organisational strategies and their collaboration initiatives, particularly in the areas of data, technology and innovation.
  3. Developing understanding of the international S&T landscape to help shape UK national security thinking, identify opportunities, and build collaboration with international partners.
  4. Supporting, coordinating, and ensuring the coherence of S&T research and development programmes across the community.
  5. Sponsoring innovation, including engagement with the National Security Strategic Investment Fund (NSSIF).
  6. Overseeing the MI5, SIS, and GCHQ Scientific Advisory Council.
  7. Supporting relevant S&T professions across the agencies, being an advocate for staff and supporting their professional development and careers.
  8. Representing the GCSA and national security science in a range of HMG fora.
  9. Providing linkage to, and insight from, world leading research groups, academia and industry and to build an external network of scientific/research expertise.
  10. Engaging thoroughly with the Government Chief Scientific Adviser and the Chief Scientific Advisers network.

  1. Credibility as a scientist, engineer or technologist, renowned in a relevant discipline.
  2. Excellence in communication, able to connect across science, mission and policy communities.
