Chief Scientific Adviser (National Security)

Join MI5 as a Chief Scientific Adviser (National Security) and play a critical role in shaping the UK's national security strategy.

About the Role

The Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) will provide independent scientific and engineering advice to the three security and intelligence agencies, ensuring that science and technology research and evidence are robust, relevant, and high-quality.

The CSA will lead on advice and delivery of science and technology for the three security and intelligence agencies, including overseeing the Science, Technology, and Engineering Programme (STEP).

As a member of the Government Chief Scientific Adviser's team, the CSA will provide strategic advice on national security science and technology in HMG and the wider national security community.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide strategic S&T advice to the three intelligence agency heads and work in partnership with their leadership teams.
  2. Advise on the direction of the agencies' organisational strategies, particularly in the areas of data, technology, and innovation.
  3. Develop understanding of the international S&T landscape to help shape UK national security thinking.
  4. Support, coordinate, and ensure the coherence of S&T research and development programmes across the community.
  5. Sponsor innovation, including engagement with the National Security Strategic Investment Fund (NSSIF).
  6. Oversee the MI5, SIS, and GCHQ Scientific Advisory Council.
  7. Represent the GCSA and national security science in a range of HMG fora.
  8. Engage thoroughly with the Government Chief Scientific Adviser and the Chief Scientific Advisers network.
  9. Excellence in communication, able to connect across science, mission, and policy communities.
  10. Commitment to personal development and promoting diversity and inclusion.
Terms of Appointment
  1. A fixed term appointment of three years with the potential to be extended up to five years.
  2. Nationality and Security Clearance:
  3. 30 Days Annual Leave, and an additional 10.5 days public and privilege holidays
