About the Position

The Ensembl Project, hosted at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), is dedicated to providing free and comprehensive genome data services to a global audience. Our mission is to distribute gene and genome data through an online genome browser, alongside publicly accessible databases and APIs. We are in search of a highly motivated and skilled Bioinformatics Developer to enhance our variation and phenotype resources.

Within the Ensembl Variation team, we construct workflows for the aggregation and annotation of large-scale data sourced from public archives. Our focus is on developing tools for data access, visualization, and variant interpretation, including the widely utilized Ensembl Variant Effect Predictor (VEP). As advancements in sequencing technology and novel techniques emerge, they generate new data types and increasingly larger datasets. Efficient management and intuitive presentation of these data are essential to unlock their full scientific potential, thereby improving our understanding of genetic diseases, evolution, and population genetics. We collaborate closely with clinical research scientists, genomics researchers, and standards-setting communities to guide the development of our services.

Your Responsibilities

  • Designing and maintaining tools for the functional annotation and prioritization of genomic variants, including Ensembl VEP.
  • Creating, maintaining, and executing efficient methods for managing and accessing large-scale variation data for community use and to support the Ensembl websites.
  • Exploring and integrating new sources of genomic variation and phenotype association data, along with prediction tools.
  • Collaborating with members of the broader Ensembl team on specific development projects and coordinating regular data and software releases.
  • Engaging with other groups at EMBL-EBI and external collaborators to enhance our tools and establish community standards for data representation.
  • Providing support to our users and presenting our work at internal meetings and scientific conferences.
  • This role presents an exciting opportunity for a motivated candidate to contribute to widely used open-source bioinformatics resources and to develop domain knowledge in a rapidly evolving scientific field. You will work closely with a team of bioinformaticians and developers while interacting with various groups at EMBL-EBI and beyond.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in designing and developing user-friendly software or code, with proficiency in Python.
  • Experience in managing and analyzing large-scale genomics data, preferably genetic variation data.
  • Familiarity with large-scale relational databases, ideally MySQL.
  • Proficiency in a UNIX/Linux environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to deliver high-quality products within agreed timelines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A strong sense of scientific curiosity and initiative.
