About the Role

The Ensembl Project, a leading provider of genome data services, seeks a talented Bioinformatics Developer to contribute to our variation and phenotype resources. We develop tools for data access, visualization, and variant interpretation, including the widely-used Ensembl Variant Effect Predictor (VEP).

Your Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain tools for functional annotation and prioritization of genomics variants, including Ensembl VEP.
  • Develop, maintain, and run efficient methods for managing and accessing large-scale variation data for community use and to power the Ensembl websites.
  • Investigate and integrate new sources of genomic variation, phenotype association data, and prediction tools.
  • Collaborate with members of the wider Ensembl team on development projects and coordinate regular data and software releases.
  • Liaise with other groups at EMBL-EBI and external collaborators to add new functionalities to our tools and agree on community standards for data representation.
  • Support our users and present our work at internal meetings and scientific conferences.

Your Qualifications

  • Experience in the design and development of user-friendly software or code, with proficiency in Python.
  • Experience of managing and analyzing large-scale genomics data, preferably genetic variation data.
  • Experience working with large-scale relational databases, preferably MySQL.
  • Proficiency working in a UNIX/Linux environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to deliver a high-quality product to agreed deadlines.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Scientific curiosity and initiative.
