Vascular Surgeon
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Trust Grade doctor to join our Vascular Surgery department at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
This is an exciting opportunity to gain excellent experience in Vascular Surgery with exposure to emergency and elective services. You will work closely with consultants, other junior doctors, and multi-disciplinary teams.
The post holder will contribute to the 1:8 on-call rota at QMC and should have completed core surgical training (or equivalent), have full MRCS, ALS, and experience working within the NHS.
Main ResponsibilitiesThe NUH Vascular department is the regional vascular tertiary referral unit. In addition to being a hub for complex elective vascular (including endovascular) referrals, we also deal with a substantial load of regional vascular emergencies.
We are engaged in performing complex vascular surgery, including open and endovascular operations, and have close links with Interventional Radiology colleagues. Nottingham was the first Trust in the UK to perform endovascular surgery and continues to be a driver for this type of surgery.
Key DutiesThe post holder will support various aspects of this busy service, with a commitment to an out-of-hours rota. The post holder will attend clinics, theatre sessions, and ward rounds as per allocation in a weekly firm timetable.
In addition, there is a local departmental teaching programme, which you would be expected to attend and contribute to.
Although this is not a training post, it should be possible for an enthusiastic doctor to map their experiences to many of the core curriculum programme competences, as all aspects of the syllabus are relevant to this attachment.
We encourage our doctors to involve themselves in audit and research. You would be expected to make yourself familiar with the processes of the audit cycle and to assess the role of audit in clinical governance and in improving patient care. Supervision for projects will be available, and support may also be available from hospital audit departments.
Post holders can expect to:
- Build upon postgraduate clinical experience
- Master a number of procedural techniques
- Further develop experience and expertise in the identification and management of the sick patient
- Further develop experience and familiarity in identifying and managing a wide variety of conditions, including making appropriate decisions regarding the need for admission
- Hone communication skills with patients, relatives, and colleagues
- Increasingly work towards independent practice at Registrar level, leading ward rounds, assessing patients, making decisions, etc., with Consultant support and supervision available
- Develop skills in managing time and conflicting priorities
- Full GMC registration
- MBBS or equivalent
- Full MRCS
- ALS
- Postgraduate Qualifications
- Good and wide-ranging recent experience of Vascular Surgery in an acute inpatient setting in a large acute hospital
- NHS experience of at least 12 months
- Evidence of completion of key competencies equivalent to at least CT/junior registrar level
- Experience of working out of hours with limited support
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit/quality improvement
- Experience and enthusiasm for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
- Able to work the full range of shifts (days, nights, lates, on-calls)
