The role involves the systematic handling of samples, including their reception, preparation, data entry, and subsequent dispatch to specialized centers as necessary.
Responsibilities include managing routine communications with general practitioners, medical professionals, nursing staff, and other healthcare personnel.
The successful candidate will prepare biological specimens collected from patients, such as blood samples, for analysis, adhering to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Key Responsibilities
The individual will collaborate with senior and support staff across various laboratory sections to ensure the delivery of a prompt, high-quality, and cost-effective service.
They will facilitate the efficient processing of patient samples for all individuals attending the healthcare facility, as well as for general practices and specialized assays referred from other institutions.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure the reception area operates efficiently, processing samples and test requests in a timely manner.
- Adhere to SOPs for the packaging and dispatch of samples, complying with postal regulations.
- Notify senior staff when inventory levels are low.
- Utilize office equipment proficiently, including computers and printers.
- Input test results into the laboratory IT system and manage inquiries regarding results.
- Operate complex laboratory analyzers to conduct investigations.
- Assist senior staff in training new personnel.
- Support the management of samples from clinical trials, ensuring proper handling and storage.
- Verify that samples and request forms match accurately.
- Communicate with patients regarding procedures in a compassionate and clear manner.
- Engage in training activities, shadowing experienced staff for up to two months.
- Maintain knowledge and skills across all laboratory sections as required.
- Document and inform requestors of any rejected samples following SOPs.
- Prepare samples for analysis using various techniques, including centrifugation and inoculation.
- Assist in the safe disposal of used specimens and maintain cleanliness in the laboratory.
- Support the distribution of reports and maintain both physical and digital records.
- Participate in the collection and storage of reagents and supplies.
- Ensure the availability of clean glassware and necessary solutions.
- Respond to inquiries from healthcare staff regarding test results and sample requirements.
- Perform basic maintenance checks on laboratory equipment as directed.
- Comply with all health and safety regulations and participate in training updates.
- Continuously update professional knowledge and skills.
- Participate in departmental meetings and training sessions as required.
- Contribute to the maintenance of workload statistics.
- Engage in the 24/7 service rota, preparing and storing patient samples appropriately.
- Ensure that received samples match work lists and patient identification before testing.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Communication and Relationships
The role requires acting as a mentor for new staff, fostering key relationships with senior scientific personnel and colleagues.
