Position Overview
Salary: £26,421 - £27,803 per annum, inclusive of weekend working allowance (pro-rata for part-time, with a base salary of £25,119-£26,421 plus a weekend working allowance of £1,302 - £1,382). An additional Crawley Allowance will also be provided.
Working Schedule: Opportunities for both part-time and full-time roles (37 hours for full-time) with a rota that includes evening and weekend shifts.

Recruitment Incentive for Children's Residential Roles - £1500 during initial 18 months
To encourage recruitment in this essential sector, West Sussex County Council offers a £1,500 incentive for new employees in permanent roles identified as challenging to fill, provided they remain employed with the Council throughout this period.
The incentive consists of two payments: £500 after the successful completion of 6 months of employment (including the successful completion of probation where applicable) and £1,000 after 18 months.
In this role, you will play a crucial part in fostering a nurturing, supportive, and secure environment for children and young individuals, ensuring compliance with statutory obligations to the highest standards. You will have direct responsibility for specific children or young people, ensuring they receive the necessary care and support to reach their full potential.
Shift Requirements
For daytime work, you will be expected to follow a shift pattern between 07:00 – 22:00, which will include working every other weekend and undertaking sleep-in duties as required. These arrangements will be discussed and agreed upon with the successful candidate.
Required Qualifications and Skills
Essential Criteria
- Strong literacy skills, including the ability to compose reports regarding individuals and significant incidents, as well as to prepare applications for the Level 3 Diploma if necessary. This can be acquired through formal education or relevant vocational experience.
- Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare or an equivalent qualification. If you do not currently possess this qualification, the service will assist you in obtaining it; you must complete this within two years of your appointment, as it is a statutory requirement for this position.
Desirable Criteria
- Understanding of the developmental needs of children in residential care settings.
- Familiarity with Children's Home Regulations 2015 (England).
- Knowledge of strategies to support children who have faced trauma, harm, or abuse.
- Previous experience in childcare, ideally within a residential context.
- Experience working with children with disabilities, complex high-risk adolescents, or related experience, such as working with adults with disabilities.
If you do not possess a Maths and English GCSE or equivalent, you will need to pursue Maths and English Keyskills prior to undertaking your Childcare qualification and being considered for this role.
