Job Overview

Are you dedicated to enhancing patient outcomes? We are seeking a qualified and motivated Biomedical Scientist with HCPC registration to join our dynamic laboratory team.

The ideal candidate will be an integral part of the Microbiology department at our facility, executing scientific protocols and interpreting results from biological specimens to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of various health conditions.

Participation in laboratory rotations is expected, and comprehensive training will be provided. Our laboratory operates core hours of 08:30 - 17:00, but we also offer 24/7 service through extended hours and an on-call system. Upon successful completion of training, candidates will be required to engage fully in extended hours, weekends, bank holidays, and on-call schedules.

Main Responsibilities

  • Utilize analytical skills to assess the clinical and pathogenic relevance of laboratory test results, including: preparing, examining, and reporting on microscopic analyses of specimens; determining appropriate tests and procedures for identifying pathogenic organisms; conducting and interpreting molecular diagnostic assessments; and referring results for clinical interpretation.
  • Conduct manual, semi-automated, and fully automated laboratory analyses.
  • Implement corrective measures when quality control or assurance protocols indicate a decline in laboratory instrument or method performance.
  • Ensure first-line troubleshooting of complex analytical equipment or methodologies.
  • Adhere strictly to current Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Safely manage biological materials, including blood, urine, feces, organs, and hazardous substances.
  • Contribute to the introduction of new technologies or methodologies.
  • Oversee the work and monitor the performance of Medical Laboratory Assistants, Associate Practitioners, and trainees/students.
  • Engage in the maintenance and further enhancement of the quality management system.
  • Comply with best practices in accordance with UKAS Accreditation standards and other relevant professional and legislative requirements.
  • Assist and act in place of the BMS7 as necessary.
  • Work flexibly according to departmental needs, which may include various shift systems or rotation patterns.

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or equivalent.
  • HCPC registration.
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in a Microbiology Laboratory.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols.

Desirable

  • Experience in a Microbiology laboratory with a similar test repertoire.
