Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled External Communications Lead to become a vital member of Team UHBW.

This position serves as the primary contact and expert for external communication initiatives throughout the organization. Responsibilities encompass media relations, public relations, crisis management, reputation oversight, public affairs, stakeholder engagement, external newsletters, and collaborative opportunities. The role requires balancing a diverse range of external relations tasks with the demands of a dynamic news environment. The successful candidate will be accountable for strategic planning in external relations for the year, as well as the creation of integrated communication campaigns on an as-needed basis, which involves developing engaging and inclusive content across various platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Report directly to the Head of Communications, assisting in the management of all communication efforts, with a specific emphasis on external audiences and channels.
  • Supervise the daily operations of communication projects, ensuring that all outputs align with the objectives outlined in the communication strategy.
  • Develop, manage, and execute an annual strategic external communication plan and editorial calendar that supports the overarching communication strategy. Collaborate with and guide team members and colleagues in implementing these plans.
  • Design, manage, and execute specialized integrated communication campaigns that align with the overall communication strategy. This integrated approach should encompass the creation of various written and audio/visual content tailored for a range of external and internal audiences. Identify innovative solutions to challenges and generate ideas to address communication issues. Collaborate with and guide team members and colleagues in executing these strategies.
  • Oversee the daily execution of communication and engagement activities related to external communications, including but not limited to media relations, crisis management, stakeholder engagement, public affairs, filming opportunities, external newsletters, award submissions, partnership initiatives, and Freedom of Information requests pertaining to MPs and the media.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Possesses a specialized postgraduate qualification in communications or has equivalent relevant experience.
  • Holds a degree in a related field or has equivalent training/experience in a communications/marketing context.
  • Demonstrates evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Membership in the Chartered Institute of Public Relations is preferred.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience in a communications manager role within a large and complex organization.
  • Highly developed expertise in external communications, effectively engaging with the media and managing reputation, crisis communications, and handling sensitive issues with care.
  • Proven experience in creating, managing, and successfully implementing strategic external communication plans, including audience mapping, key message development, channel strategy, activity planning, and KPI evaluation.
  • Significant experience in developing, managing, and executing integrated communication campaigns addressing specific issues/priorities across the full communications spectrum.
  • In-depth knowledge of legislation and best practices related to patient consent, confidentiality, Freedom of Information requests, GDPR, and the Accessible Information Standard.
  • Proficient in utilizing a variety of communication tools, including media monitoring systems, social media scheduling tools, website content management systems, and graphic design software.
  • Experience in line management and familiarity with HR processes.
  • Proven ability to work as a business partner, advising on communication strategies and campaigns to relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of commissioning audio/visual content, such as videos, podcasts, and photography.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing budgets effectively.
  • Experience in overseeing external agencies, including digital, print, and design firms.
  • Proven track record in implementing trust-wide policies and actively engaging in proposing enhancements to communication service delivery.
