Position Overview

The Children's Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) and Child Development Centre (CDC) teams collaborate closely with parent advocacy groups and essential stakeholders in education and social care to enhance service delivery through co-production.

Our teams are dedicated to ensuring that staff possess the necessary skills and time to take pride in their contributions. As a Band 6 professional, you will have various options and opportunities to provide care and support while advancing your expertise across multiple specialist pathways. These include early years complex needs, child development centres, special schools, outreach, augmentative and alternative communication, eating and drinking challenges, stammering, and both early and school-aged speech and language development, as well as speech disorders and Developmental Language Disorder. We deliver care across universal, targeted, and specific intervention levels.

The SLT team includes a research lead, and we actively encourage everyone to engage in audit, service enhancement, and research initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive and independent assessments of speech, language, and communication for children and young people, including those with complex needs, utilizing investigative and analytical skills.
  • Interpret clinical and non-clinical data to create an accurate profile of strengths, challenges, and requirements, including diagnoses and prognoses across a variety of complex conditions.
  • Collaborate with children, young people, parents, and other stakeholders to formulate care plans.
  • Provide care and support at a highly specialized level.
  • Enhance your knowledge, skills, and clinical networks in your chosen specialty, responding to available evidence and participating in audit, service improvement, and research.

The Children's SLT team works in close coordination with Children's Therapy Services, the Child Development Centres, and Community Paediatrics, while also providing support to local acute wards.

Strong collaborative relationships exist across the Children's and Families service delivery group with all teams.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • Recognized degree in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent.
  • Current Health Professions Council license to practice as a Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Paediatric dysphagia or willingness to pursue such a qualification.
  • Evidence of relevant short course completion and ongoing professional development.

Essential Experience

  • Extensive post-graduate experience addressing a variety of speech, language, and communication challenges in children.
  • Significant experience working with children and young people with complex speech, language, and special educational needs.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary team settings to assess the needs of children and families.
  • Proficiency in utilizing various assessment tools and processes.
  • Experience in handling sensitive information regarding children's well-being in accordance with safeguarding protocols.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential Knowledge

  • Familiarity with national policies and procedures relevant to Children's Speech and Language Therapy and education for Children and Young People.
  • Understanding of safeguarding procedures and their practical application.
  • Awareness of recent developments in practice and research, including national guidelines.
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and risk management and their implications for service delivery.
  • Strong analytical and reflective skills.
  • Highly developed auditory and perceptual abilities.
  • Knowledge of relevant speech, language, and communication assessments, interventions, and techniques, along with the ability to evaluate their effectiveness.
