Role Introduction

The Communications Office is tasked with the overarching communications strategy for the House of Commons, managing both internal and external messaging. This includes professional development for the communications field and significant collaborative communications efforts with the House of Lords. The team operates within the Executive Office, delivering comprehensive support across branding, design, social media, photography, press relations, and strategic communication planning.

Position Description

The role of Brand Designer is pivotal in establishing and maintaining brand standards. You will collaborate with design colleagues, the Communications Office, and content creators to refine our brand identity strategy, ensuring a distinct and engaging brand voice, tone, and visual representation that resonates with our audiences.

In partnership with the Head of Visual Brand and the Creative Lead, you will guide the evolution of the House of Commons brand identity, fostering strong relationships across Parliament to enhance understanding of the significance and impact of visual communications. Your leadership will help embed a consistent and coherent branding system.

Working closely with the Senior Creative Studio Manager and the Creative Lead, you will develop impactful creative solutions for a variety of projects, including events, internal campaigns, digital platforms, and key publications. This role includes line management of a Mid-Weight Designer and offers guidance to colleagues within the Communications Office and other business areas on best practices while championing innovative design approaches.

As the Brand Guardian, you will oversee the application of our identity systems by internal teams and external partners. You will provide advice and support to colleagues across Parliament, the Communications Office, and our network of Brand Practitioners to ensure consistent interpretation and application of our brand identities across all platforms, while also developing self-service resources and toolkits for teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and drive brand standards, collaborating with design teams and content producers to shape our brand identity strategy.
  • Utilize your expertise to oversee the development and management of our identity systems and guidelines, guiding teams and external partners in their application.
  • Promote cohesive design practices throughout the organization, facilitating workshops to educate and empower others in creating on-brand experiences.

Candidate Profile

To excel in this position, you will need to demonstrate:

  • Extensive experience in brand identity management and strong stakeholder engagement skills to effectively uphold brand standards in a complex organization.
  • A high level of creativity with a proven track record of delivering engaging and innovative designs for both digital and print media.
  • The ability to work collaboratively and flexibly within a team, fostering cross-functional cooperation to build a supportive culture.
  • Excellent organizational skills, capable of prioritizing tasks and delivering high-quality work under tight deadlines, with experience working alongside studio managers and commissioning teams.
  • Strong communication skills, particularly in influencing decision-makers and articulating design concepts to stakeholders without a design background.
