Join Fives as an Optics Process Development Engineer

Fives is a leading company in the sustainability industry, creating innovative solutions for a greener future. As an Optics Process Development Engineer, you will be part of a dynamic team responsible for designing and managing projects from start to finish.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Develop and test high-precision special purpose machinery and test equipment at our Cranfield Precision site.
  • Visit customer sites worldwide for machine installation, upgrades, process development, and technical support.
  • Provide customer training for our range of grinding machines.
  • Deliver new machine build and R&D projects on schedule.
  • Liaise with project teams on a technical level.
  • Complete site reports, visit reports, and other documentation as required.
  • Assist with commissioning ultra-precision machine tools.
  • Assist with set-up and error correction of ultra-precision machine tools.
  • Work within our ISO9000-2008 quality system.
  • Understand and work in line with Fives Values and Directives.

Key Skills Requirements:

  • Relevant engineering qualification in a mechanical or optical discipline.
  • Self-driven individual with a 'can-do' attitude.
  • Effective communicator.
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team.
  • Ability to problem-solve and fault-find in a logical and methodical manner.
  • Proficient with basic software packages.
  • Full driving license and passport for international travel.

Specialist Skills:

  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret optical, mechanical component, and electrical drawings.
  • Understanding of optical metrology systems.
  • Understanding of ultra-precision machine tools and systems.
  • Understanding of machine calibration methods and adjustments.

Desirable Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with precision optical manufacturing and optical lens systems.
  • Familiarity with optical metrology instruments.
  • Familiarity with optical grinding wheel technologies.
  • Familiarity with Cranfield Precision OGM and TTG grinding machine range and customers.
