About the Role

The Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to fill the position of Genomic Medicine Service Director. This role will play a crucial part in leading and coordinating research and innovation projects across the East Genomic Medicine Service Alliance region.

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide senior leadership of the coordination of genomic research and innovation projects across the complex footprint of the East Genomic Medicine Service Alliance.
  • Work closely with the Clinical Director, Strategy Director, senior clinical team members, and other regional stakeholders to ensure the effective management of the genomic research programme.
  • Build strong links with the East Genomics Executive Board, Local Genomic Lab representatives, Cellular Pathology Genomic Centres, and Clinical Genetics Services across the region.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including NHSE/I Genomics Unit, NIHR Biomedical Research Centres, NIHR Clinical Research Facilities, and the Life Sciences Industry.
Key Requirements
  • Educated to PhD level or equivalent level or above, with experience of working in a leadership position in a specialist area.
  • A recognised national/international profile in leading and coordinating research and innovation projects and in contributing to national and international initiatives in genomic science/medicine.
  • An understanding and experience of the UK research funding landscape, including experience of working with partners such as the National Institute of Healthcare Research (NIHR), industry, and academia.
  • Knowledge and experience of the NHS innovation landscape and partners, including the Health Innovation networks and what evidence is needed to influence adoption and spread across the NHS.
  • An understanding of issues surrounding research, including patient confidentiality, good clinical practice, and research governance.
  • Knowledge of quality control, assurance, and audit practice for research purposes.
  • An understanding of the role of the NHS Genomic Medicine Service, in particular the role of the NHS Genomic Medicine Service Alliances as a key part of this infrastructure.
  • Experience of managing or overseeing innovation projects in healthcare, research, academia, or an industry with a focus on innovation.
  • Experience of building, developing, and nurturing cross-functional and multi-disciplinary teams, with experience of training, mentoring, and coaching.
  • Experience of change management, whether in the NHS or a comparably complex environment.
  • Experience of delivering successful implementation of major healthcare and/or innovation and/or digital projects in the NHS or broader healthcare sector in partnership with a range of stakeholders.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience of working in genomics or life sciences in the NHS.
  • Demonstrable leadership, vision, strategic thinking, and planning with highly developed political skills.
  • Demonstrable ability to plan over short, medium, and long-term timeframes and adjust plans and resource requirements accordingly.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide informative reporting on impact to Board management.
  • Commercial and intellectual property strategy development.
