Position Overview

We are currently seeking a Clinical Genomics Specialist for a fixed-term position focused on healthcare science. This role is integral to our diagnostic services, particularly within the Haemato-Oncology sector.

The Cambridge Genomics Laboratory is actively looking for skilled Healthcare Scientists with a background in a Haemato-Oncology diagnostics environment. We have multiple openings available across our Cytogenomic, Molecular, and Lymphoma teams. Candidates should be HCPC Registered Clinical Scientists or nearing registration. HCPC registered professionals with the necessary experience will be appointed at Band 7, while those in the process of registration will start at Band 6 until their registration is finalized, adhering to departmental timelines.

As the leading laboratory in the East Genomic Laboratory Hub (East GLH), we provide Cancer Genomics testing to numerous NHS Trusts, catering to a large population. This role presents an exciting opportunity to engage in a dynamic and evolving workplace where you will analyze and report intricate data, delivering timely and clinically relevant insights to healthcare providers.

You will become part of a vibrant team dedicated to staff development and making a significant impact on patient care through cutting-edge genomic testing technologies.

Key Responsibilities

1. Conduct analysis, interpretation, and reporting of hematology cancer cytogenomic and molecular genomic tests.
2. Deliver and uphold a high-quality diagnostic service to regional oncology departments.
3. Provide expert advice to clinicians and colleagues.
4. Oversee a small team of scientists, focusing on recruitment, training, and continuous professional development.
5. Drive continuous improvement and advancement of laboratory services.
6. Maintain ISO:15189 compliance through effective quality management systems.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications
- A first degree in a relevant biological science or equivalent qualification.
- Completion of a formal training program in genomics, clinical molecular genetics, cytogenetics, or cancer genetics (MSc or similar) or equivalent experience.
- Registration as a Healthcare Scientist (Clinical Scientist or Biomedical Scientist) with the Health Care Professions Council.

Desirable Qualifications
- Membership in relevant professional organizations (ACGS, AHCS, BSGM, IBMS).

Essential Experience
- Significant experience in a Clinical Diagnostic Genetics laboratory as a Clinical/Biomedical Scientist, performing both routine and complex genomic tests.
- Proficiency in analyzing genomic data and reporting results.
- Experience in a leadership role as a duty scientist or team leader.

Essential Knowledge and Skills
- Comprehensive understanding of human cytogenetics and/or cancer genetics.
- Familiarity with processes for examining cancer samples in a clinical laboratory setting.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret cytogenomic and molecular genomic test results.
